The link has four shots of the two women in identical get ups. The
second shot is the most disturbing to me because it shows how thin
some of these fashion women are. There just has to be an eating
disorder going on.

Fashion itself is the disorder.
Donna Evleth
While there are elements to that idea that are true, I think the
point is how thin these models really can be and how that can't be
something that should be encouraged, leaving aside whether or not
that's even attractive given that the camera adds ten pounds or
whatever. Did you look at the shots? Side by side, it isn't clear
that the fat one isn't a little big but it is really clear,
especially in I think it's shot 2, that the thin one is scary thin.
Not attractive at all it should go without saying.

The thin one is indeed scary thin, and the "fat" one is not fat. The whole
problem is, as I said, fashion, and its skewed values. Why the hell should
anyone be interested in "fashion models", whether thin or "fat"? These
women are idolized, when in fact they are nothing but very expensive clothes
hangers. What do they do that is of interest or importance?
Donna Evleth
I'm not sure about sizes, is size 16 in this context about what
weight?

Well, I was reading the Daily Mail and, well, it went from there.

Don't be angry, discuss amongst yourselves.

I can't tell you because everything depends on height and build. Also it
depends on the way the clothes are cut. Some size 16s are bigger than
others.

"Amongst yourselves"? I thought I was only discussing with you. I am not
suffering from any multiple personality syndrome.
Donna Evleth
It must have some actual meaning since they said she was size 16.
The waif was size 0 or some damn thing.

This is a newsgroup, Donna, others can discuss too. And I was
thinking of "Coffee Talk":

Whenever Linda would get upset, she would put her hand on her chest
and say "I'm all verklempt" or "I'm a little verklempt." Then she
would say, "Talk amongst yourselves", sometimes waving her hand in
a dismissive gesture toward the audience. She would often follow
this with an example by saying, "I'll give you a topic." The topic
would usually follow this format: "[two- or three-part phrase] is
neither [first part] nor [second part] (nor [occasional third
part]). Discuss."
Examples:
* "The radical reconstruction of the South after the Civil War
was neither radical nor a reconstruction. Discuss."
* "The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy nor Roman nor an
empire. Discuss." (This quote is based on a famous comment by
Voltaire.)
* "The peanut is neither a pea nor a nut. Discuss."
* "Ralph Fiennes is spelled neither rafe nor fines. Discuss."
* "Duran Duran is neither a Duran nor a Duran. Discuss."
* "Rhode Island is neither a road nor is it an island.
Discuss."
* "The Thighmaster is neither a thigh nor a master. Discuss."
* "The Progressive Era was neither progressive nor an era.
Discuss."
* "Did Truman drop the bomb on the Japanese to end the war or
to scare the hell out of the Russians? Discuss."
* "The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is neither Mormon nor a
tabernacle nor a choir. Discuss."
* "The New Deal was neither new nor was it a deal. Discuss."
* "The Romanesque Church design was based on the Roman
Basilica. Discuss."
* "The chickpea is neither a chick nor a pea. Discuss."
* "Transitional Romanesque architecture was neither
transitional nor Romanesque. Discuss."
* "The internal combustion engine was neither internal nor
combustion. Discuss."

In the second shot, she looks like she could do with a sandwich but
she's still not unattractive for it.

They (or their handlers or fashion houses or whoever) dictate to us what our
body image happens to be. Women are told to be as much like models as possible
(i.e. thin) and men are told that only those body types are desirable.
That makes them both interesting and important, if you ask me. They may not
have sparkling personalities or oceans of talent but their mere existence is
something that raises serious considerations for us.
