No Tax Increase On What?

When he wasn't bullying the president or the moderator of the debate
[Page 1, "A Spirited Rematch," Oct. 17], Republican Mitt Romney stated
that he would not raise taxes on the interest, dividend or capital
gains income of the middle class. Big deal. So everything else is up
for grabs?
As a proud member of the 47 percent, I now live on Social Security
disability benefits, which I earned after a long career in the
nonprofit world. My savings were wiped out after six months of
hospitalization following spinal surgery. In 2011, I earned less than
$30 interest on my savings account. Dividend income is a thing of the
past for me, and I haven't been fortunate enough to have to worry
about capital gains in more than a decade. I suspect that other
members of the middle class may be in similar situations. Once cannot
get blood out of a stone, and Mr. Romney can't have it both ways.
What a relief to know that Romney won't raise my taxes on my $30 of
interest income -- at least until he changes his mind. Now I can sleep
at night.
