We are a small business doing about $5M annually in the wholesale
distribution of commercial builder's hardware. We have 15 people on
board and are looking for software fo GL, AR, AP, Payroll, Sales
orders and invoicing. We looked at Quick Books Pro but it seems a
little weak. The other programs all seem to be in the $10K and up
range. Is there anything out there of higher quality than QB in the
$2K - $4K range? Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

D - There is a package by SAGE called "BusinessWorks" that is in your
price range. The product is full of features. You did not mention
Inventory Control and I was wondering why? I have worked (sold,
installed, and implemented) several clients that are Wholesale
Distributors and they always want to track Inventory. I ask because the
Inventory Module for BW is very strong. It even tracks the price
variance for products sold before they are received. We often sell
something before the receiver has had time to be entered and so the
On-Hand Quantity goes negative. The system tracks the current cost of
the product and then makes an adjustment for any price variance once the
receiver is posted. It also allows you to track Multiple Warehouses,
Serial #'s, Multiple Product Lines (with individual GL account codes),
Physical Counts, and will actually tell you what you need to order from
your Vendors after reviewing the Committed Quantities, on-hand qty, open
Purchase Orders, and minimum stock values. It tracks 3 different
pricing levels as well as quantity break pricing and additional %
discounts by customer. You can download a test drive from the web site -
www.sota.com. Please use my name as your contact as I get credit for
it. I have been a Reseller for BW for 7 years now and have many
references available to you. If you need additional information -
please call. See card below.

There are a few in that range here are some that you could look at:

Business Vision 2000 (based in Florida & Ontario)
MYOB Premier (Similar to QuickBooks)
Integrated Office Accounting (Based in Ontario) (Similar to UA Corporate
Accounting but less $$$)
Cougar Mountain Software (Based in the Midwest)

Here is a good start for you. I would suggest contacting an Accounting
software consultant who is able to do a Needs analysis and locate software
based on your operational, systems requirements and budget. The rule of
thumb is to budget an equal or greater amount for installation and training
in the mid-range software market - these are not "plug & run" type
applications.

I think that the volume of business that you do the price of 10K is probably
the product line you want.

You say you need a car, and your annual income in 150K, and you don't like
the feel of a GEO Metro. I suggest something in Cadillac, Buick or Mercury.
I'm not coming in with BMW, nor Rolls Royce.

There are plenty of packages to choose from. Spend more time on the
interview process of your reseller. Get references, check them out and see
how long it takes them to:

1) Get back to you when you call early on.
2) Have opportunity to make modifications for your business.
3) Updates schedule and are they worth the $ and do they cause more harm
than good.
4) Are they trainers or sales people?
5) Are they open to your ownership of your code and data, or do they think
that you are just renting it?

Good Luck from and End User.

QuickBooks will probably work for you unless you carry a lot of
inventory or have a data file larger than 60 megabytes. It only costs
around $200. I recommend that you give it a shot before you move up to
something more expensive. In addition, if you stick with QuickBooks,
in a couple of years, you may see a QuickBooks enterprise edition.

On the other hand, if you're set on something else, look into one of
the packages from SBT. There are several choices, and it is easily-
configured. BTW, I am not affiliated with either company.

Try looking at DBA Software: http://www.dbasoftware.com They are within your
range, and were my choice when we went through this a couple of months ago.

Good Luck!
