I'm doing some computer work for a company that future-dates invoices in
QuickBooks. I'm not an accountant, and wonder if that's legitimate
accounting practice. It just doesn't seem legit to me. Someone told me that
SAP software won't even let you do it (but that could be wrong).

The invoices are dated for future speaking engagements. Clients get an
invoice for the full amount with an invoice date of the speaking date, and
pay installments.

The date of sale should be the invoice date and recognized as such in
Quicken as a sale on credit. The invoice terms should dictate the service
date and the installments. The buyer can then book it as a prepaid item
instead of an expense. It sounds like the company is trying to shorten its
a/r cycle period.

Lead me not into temptation. I can find it myself.
