Move afoot to outlaw divorce
A California man wants divorce outlawed.
John Marcotte has filed for a ballot initiative to protect traditional
marriage in the state of California as an extension of the work related to
Proposition 8, the voter-approved constitutional amendment that defines
marriage as between one man and one woman. In essence, Marcotte's project
would legally ban divorce.
"Marriage is an important and sacred institution, and I'm just trying to
safeguard it in really the most direct way possible," he states.
He says he needs the help of California's registered voters in acquiring
"700,000 valid signatures, which likely translates into 1,000,000
[signatures] total." He further reports that he only has about five months
to gather that support for the 2010 California Marriage Protection Act.
The traditional marriage advocate points to the Bible as validating marriage
and providing limited reasons for divorce. "It's a little difficult to
translate God's law into the law of a secular state, so I think this is
about as close as we can come without probably running into some
constitutional issues," Marcotte explains.
He adds that media attention has helped get the message out, and that people
are talking more about the issue. His hope is that the growing discussion
will translate into enough petition signatures for a 2010 ballot. His group
has organized "The Wedding March on the Capitol" on Saturday (Nov. 14), and
has also established a Facebook fan page that has attracted more than 9,000
fans.

Another twit who would rather live in a theocracy than a secular republic.
Why is it that aspiring theocrats assume that the government will reflect
their specific religious sect?

Oh look who just got pwned!
John Marcotte launched this petition drive to highlight the hypocrisy
of the "Yes on Prop 8" proponents. I guess satire doesn't exist on
Planet OneNewsNow.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
More likely J wants to be able to keep at least one mail order bride or at
least be able to stone her if she commits adultry.
Heh. The only "mail order" enterprises that JYoung/IBen patronizes
are the ones that ship their products in plain brown wrappers.
Yeah, right, *there's* a good idea. The only thing that will
accomplish will be to make the murder rate skyrocket.

I'd like to see Marcotte's project pitched as rolling back
unilateral divorce, one of the two major social policies
enacted into California law by then-governor Ronald Reagan.
His other policy, of course, was legalizing of elective abortion.
Paint the "Undo what Reagan did" label on what Marcotte's
trying to do and California's leftists will _have_to_ vote for it!
(Ha ha.)

Good one Society. I thought the guy was serious and liked the

It's been tried elsewhere. And failed.

Got any reliable sources of information showing that
murder rates plunged when U.S. states imposed the present
regime of unilateral divorce?
Or do you just suppose that today's women are so wedded to easy
termination of marriages that they'd kill for it, Brenda Nelson?
