I noticed that there are many stereo pair images which appear to be 2d
images that were converted to add depth. I've read about that method using
layers and photoshop, but I was just wondering if there was an easier way to
do it. I downloaded the demo of T3D but haven't been able to achieve the
results I would like. Any of you folks have experience at this?

I would recommend to use a depthmap method. You draw an elevation map
in photoshop and then with a special software (like stereogram lab)
you can get a stereopair rendered. This method may seem more difficult
then the cut-and-shift technique, but it allows to make smooth
surfaces, adjust depth for whole scene and easier fix depth errors.
Unfortunatelly I haven't had a chance to write a tutorial yet.

You can find Free Stereogram Lab at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3D-Stereograms/
(in Files section of the group). You need to join the group in order
to get access to the Files section - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3D-
Stereograms/files/

In the Stereogram Lab you will need to set number of repetition to 2
for a stereopair.

Good luck!

There is dedicated 2d-3d conversion software, StereoPaint.

the new ESP version is quite good and easy to use
www.zenratai.com/software/stereopaint
it supports cross-eye, parallel and anaglyph
so you can paint and edit in real-time with red/cyan glasses

you can also use it to just paint around in 3D which is fun

Another method involves using any imaging program to shift pixels. It is
tedious but used a lot. See this DVD which explains it:
