A few months back someone posted the following password file to one of
the Linux groups. Apparently, the file is an eleven-year old one that
has as users two rather well known individuals.

David Ritchie and Ken Thompson are known as co-founders of UNIX
systems, developed at AT&T. Ritchie is also credited with being the
father of the C programming language. As a lark, I thought it would be
interesting to see what passwords these two guys would use, so I got a
copy of rjg-crack and set to work.  

Ritchie (dmr) was first up. His password turned out to be surprisingly
easy--dmac1--took only eight hours to crack. But Thompson's (ken) has
been the proverbial tough nut. I have spent at least 2000 hours of
computer time on my lowly Cyrix 5x86-100 with no success. I have
decided to give up trying, but I thought someone else might want to
continue.

There is no prize, no system to crack. Curiosity alone will be
satisfied for anyone who succeeds where I did not.
