That depends on the policies specific to the agency

Actually some probably do.  I've known some places, especially older
hospitals, that are using systems that are more than a quarter century
out of date.  Often times the problem is that the system is as big as
a room and it's not something you can just set out at the curb and let
the garbage man haul off, so they just stick with it for as long as
possible.

Agreed, but I think that on a somewhat higher level any Government agency
won't be using tapes anymore.
As you say it takes up a lot of space.

At our office the whole tape back-up system was ditched some 2 years ago.
Correct me if I'm wrong, the tapes looked like DAT tapes and were stored in
big fire proof cabinets.
2 guys were busy all day with these tapes and all the work involved.
As far as I know back ups are now made on HD's.

Why don't you ask some law enforcement types?

I'm not law enforcement, but our tapes are retained until who ever is in
charge retires. :P

Basically they're rotated out, verified, and shipped off to Iron Mountain,
never to be heard from again.

I know I have a Sheriff datacenter and a DHS office in the building next
door. I suppose I could go ask them.

That ought to be a fun conversation....
