If you are thinking about learing UNIX for the corporate world, have you
considered getting Solaris for Intel from Sun. (there is also unixware
but IMHO it's days are numbered) Methinks it's free and it is a good
tool. I have only had Redhat 8 for 24 hours but looks & feels good.

To be honest, Sol x86 (well, the same could be said about sparc tree
too -grin-) is far to arcane and broken to be of much use for a somewhat
daunted newcomer to opensource..

What??? I installed EMACS-NT on WinME and set it to be the default
association for *.txt,*.ini,*.bat,etc. files.  That way I don't have to
worry about inappropriately typing C-X C-C :-)
I do still find myself typing 'ls', 'cat', etc. in Windows but it wasn't
as bad as when I first transited from AmigaOS and was typing "execute
#?.bat" :-D

AMD were cool until they came up with Quantispeed(TM), which is a pile
of wank.  "We think our proc's as fast as your proc so we'll badge it as
one of yours".  The only problem I have from a design POV with my
Celeron is the limited L2 Cache (and it still has a 100MHz bus), but to
be fair any even modeerately complicated software will confuse the
caching routines anyway.

Interesting. Do you know much about it other than what they have in their
FAQ? Does it use a linux type directory structure? stuff like that. Looks
like something to put on my folks *next* computer. It's too bad it won't
run on NTFS :-(

A few commments:

1. solaris x86 isnt free, it costs 20 US dollars.
2. solaris for sun hardware is free.
3. solaris, being a UNIX certified by the opengroup, is well worth
learning, no matter how arcane it can be.
4. solaris has nothing to do with opensource anything.
5. in comparing solaris to redhat (for example), I find that I much
prefer solaris broken-ness to the impenetrable mass of legacy sym
   links that is redhat.
6. solaris is absolutely intrenched in the corporate world; it may
be the most widely used certified UNIX at the moment.
7. while solaris can be a daunting install for the absolute newbie,
its sheer consistency IMHO makes it much easier to learn than linux
for someone with no unix or UNIX experience at all.
8. freebsd kicks ass.

How is the freebsd package system quirky?  Do you mean the ports
collection?

If you do; ports are not the same thing as packages.
