The original brochure in 1979 did state that the displacement was 11,100. However at that time almost everything was an option including an inboard engine, hot water heater, hot and cold pressure water, stove with an oven, instruments, teak interior, the list goes on. I have always felt the boat with all that equipment was at least 12,000 lbs empty. Sailing weight with a normal load was probably closer to 13,000 lbs than 12,000 lbs.
I have never shipped my boat but if any of you did I will bet that trucker knew exactly what his load weighed.
I will also add that manufacturers are known for tweaking the weight of their boats to the low side to make some of the performance numbers look better. Now I have no concrete evidence that Tom Allmand ever purposely tweaked the displacement numbers but it is not uncommon for early specifications to underestimate the actual weight of final production versions. One good example of that by a reputable manufacturer was the introduction of the Catalina 380 in 1996 I think it was. The original specs said it weighed a little over 16,000 lbs. I was running Hellier's at the time and we ordered a stock one in the fall. When we moved it to our inside showroom it broke a set of dolly's we used for that purpose. The next year I noticed more up to date brochures showed the weight at 19,500 lbs. I could site numerous examples of either innocent mistakes or outright misinformation. My own Saga 43 showed a displacement of 19,800 lbs but the foreman confessed to me the real weight was a little over 22,000 lbs.
Hope you find this info helpful.
