Spent an enjoyable afternoon on the Llangollen Railway yesterday. Was
impressed by the scenery, the welcoming staff, and the spirited
running -
albeit late, after lots of pfaffing with the run-rounds at both ends
of the
line. Off-train activities were pretty limited, however, with no
engine shed
to explore, and (unless I missed it) no exposition of the history of
the
line - I would have thought something could be set up in a carriage
at
Carrog without too much expenditure. So after doing a round trip, I
decided
to walk along the canal from Llangollen to Berwyn. The latter must
surely be
the most spectacularly sited standard guage preserved railway station
in the
country.

Driving in on the A539 (Ruabon/Wrexham road) I was surprised at the
number
of buses shuttling between Llangollen and Wrexham, most of which
looked well
patronised. It made me wonder whether Llangollen - Ruabon is one of
the less
fanciful potential re-openings? I've never heard it mentioned on the
long
list of perennial favourites which will never happen (Uckfield - Lewes
etc).
There are some obstacles at the Llangollen end - including, I think,
the
long stay car park I used, but otherwise the trackbed looks pretty
clear on
my 1:25 OS map. However, I have no local knowledge. I suppose there's
also
the point that if the bus service is reliable, frequent and
reasonably
priced, the 'push' factor on modal shift is limited. It would come
down to a
trade off between cost and time. Does Wrexham suffer traffic jams?

I was in the general area having spent a week on a course in Holmes
Chapel,
but would be tempted to return for the annual Railcar event in 2010,
perhaps
using the Wrexham & Shropshire and Ruabon as a railhead. I feel a
plan
coming together.....

J'ai trouvé une vidéo sur un gala d'autorails à Llangollen,

Cette gare est elle sur une ligne qui a encore une activité autre que
touristique ?
