Welcome to those of you who've accepted the invitation for the UCT Algorithm Circle! I think it's time to go around introducing ourselves.
For those of you who attended the introduction class on Wednesday, I was the one spamming you with all that boring information. :P I went to Rondebosch Boys' High and was the first from the school to make the SACO 3rd round, and then the IOI in Greece. I am currently studying my masters in Computer Science, sort of helping biologists crack the meaning of life. I head the SACO Scientific Committee, which sets the problems, runs the technical side of things and does all the training of the IOI squad. I have been deputy team leader for the last two IOI competitions.
Now it's your turn. Yay! :)

Heres my story
I went to Pinehurst Primary and am currently in Grade 9 at Westerford High.
I learnt computer programming from my dad who is a programmer. I my first
language was pascal. I first took part in mathematics competitions in grade
4. I am the Joint chairman of the Computers, Robotics and Electronic
Designes Club at Westerford.

Grade 9... Wow, I feel old now, I'm in grade 12 at SACS and I started
programming in Python a few years back. I was looking at the source
for FreeVO (an opensource mediacentre app) and thought 'Wow, what a
nice looking language!', and started learning it. Last year I did some
work for MoinMoin as part of GHOP, and managed to get myself selected
as the grand prize winner for the project. Interestingly enough, I get
really good marks for IT and Science at school, yet my maths hasn't
been above 65% since grade 8. I blame the teacher(s) :P

I'm doing honours in Computer Science (and a bit of maths) and will be
one of the teachers. I also went to Pinehurst Primary (yo Robert ;) ),
then to Pinelands High. I've attended 2 IOIs, getting a silver medal
in the 2nd one. I'm also part of the SACO scientific committee.

I suppose I must also jump on the bandwagon and send my greetings to Rob and
Keegan as I am also from Pinehurst! I started with JavaScript and then Java.
My claim to fame is taking a Lego Robotics team to Norway to represent South

Hey everyone, I'm Julian Kenwood, one of the teacher/tutor type people. I went to Reddam House Constantia. I'm also doing honours in computer science and maybe a maths module or two at UCT. I am also mortal.
I'm Max Rabkin. I didn't go to Pinehurst. I went to Cedar House, but took Computer Studies HG (what's now called IT, it seems) at SACS with Min.
I started programming in BASIC (bad times, bad times), but over the years I've learnt many languages: I learned Java at school, Python for the SACO, C++ for the IOI (I went once), Haskell for mind-expansion. I also know a little bit of a few other languages.
I'm doing honours in mathematics at UCT this year.
(And you won't see me at classes for another few weeks because I'm in the US)
Having gone to the IOI, I guess I'm immortal. But Julian is actually immortal too, even if he claims not to be: don't you know that Kenwood is "legend to last forever".
I be Richard Baxter (though everyone seems to call me raxter for some
reason), I am one of the teacher/tutor people and am quite quite mortal :p
but I've taken part in a couple competitions locally, probably just a cut or
two under Julian algorithmically (who, I say, should get at least
semi-immortal status if he isn't immortal). I went to Camps Bay High School
and did Computer Science as my 7th subject (had to teach myself coding
mostly). Started coding in Turbo Pascal when i was in std 4, forgot most of
it and then did Java in high school, now I mainly use C++ and Python.
Currently about to start Honours in Computer Science with my goal of going
into making awe inspiring computer games (yay :D yay) or something else that
involves mind-blowing visuals (or mind-blowing anything really). Otherwise
I'm trying to do as many philosophy courses as I can fit time to do ( no
time to do any this year though :-( honours is just too much work ).
Oh and I tend to be quite verbose, mostly confused, can't spell, forget
almost anything anyone tells me and I am usually late for everything.
Look forward to helping you dudes and dudettes out,
-Richard

I'm Ashraf Moolla, in grade 10 at Rondebosch. I've taken part in the
olympiad previously but if you recognise my name, it's probably because of
my brothers. We use java at school but I know enough to get around the
basics with python.
(Marco, my python knowledge is very elementary so I think I could benefit
from learning it properly and attend from the start)

I'm Ben Steenhuisen and I havent touched alcohol in 2 days.
But really, I am a UCT 3rd year computer science course, also doing Game Design, and I am one of your
teacher/tutor people
.
I was in the SACO 3rd Round/top 20/{whatever its called} for 2 years while I went to Hilton College, not really featuring in the medals section *D. Also do the ACM, Standard Bank IT Challenge, and whatever else is interesting.
I started programming in Std 7 in Basic and Turbo [l33t] Pascal, moving onto Java in Matric. Learnt Python in 1st year varsity [and now it would be my language of choice] and C++ in 2nd year. Also learnt part of some random languages such as PHP and Ruby when trying to copy-pasta-edit some code for side projects I am working on.
Oh, and Julain is so awesome he puts the *laughter* in *manslaughter*.
I'm Sarah Tetlow (though its pointless saying that since it says who
posted it...) and i am in grade 9 at Herschel. I have never done
computer programming before but i know the most about computers in my
family.
One thing i HAVE to say is I AM NOT A NERD!!!!! I AM JUST CLEVER!!!!!
I love computers and SOCCER RULES!
I love the algorithm circle even though there's only been one lesson
and am really excited about learning more
computery stuff...!
I came 9th in grade 8 in the Uct competition (only girl to be in top
10) and got a gold award. I cant wait for nxt week to come and thanx
raxter for helping today. you are cool and definitely mortal. lol :]
I'm Kira Düsterwald, grade 10 Springfield. I've never programmed
before (except for yesterday and one SACs session), but I've got a
half-brother who seems to pretty good at it... (it's his career, so go
figure)
I've been involved in the maths scene since grade 8... gone to the
Stellies camps and all... (good times, good times :P)
So yup, anyway, amped for the this year's classes! :) yesterday's alg
circle was awesome! :)
Ciao,
Kira

Ok well, basics first, my name is Amy Tyndall (DUH!!) and I am in grade 9 at
Herschel Girls School. I have absolutely no idea what those things meant
that half of you said, but hey that's why we're here right? To learn!!!
YIPPEEEE!! =P
haha Sarah, my darling cousin, I have to agree with you. I am also not a
nerd I am also just clever!! Academics are seriously my zone. A's all
round!! . . .and one or two B's!! LOL and ya soccer is pretty cool.
Random stuff:
I LOVE MUSIC!!! It like totally rules. And singing is my vibe. I own
singing! =] I was a member of the Tygerberg Children's Choir for three
years- we rock guys -and last year we went to the world choir games in
Austria and won two golds and a silver aha!!
I am doing grade 6 violin this year and grade 5 piano and marimbas are so
cool.
So ya I'm pretty new to the whole algi/maths circle thing but I can't wait.
And all you dudettes, I just want to say well done. How cool is it that us
girls are so great and clever to get in? Mmm Hmm. Raxter u r totally chilled
thanx so much for your help!!

I'm Kieren Davies, I'm at the International School of Hout Bay, grade
11 (sort of, it's complicated).
I've been attending Maths Circle for a painfully long time... about 4
years, I think. Been to Stellenbosch Camp three times, the food's
gradually getting better.
Done SACO a few times, got to the second round. I'm really stoked to
get into the whole programming scene a bit more.
On a more personal note, some of my hobbies are gaming, paintball, and
rock climbing.
My name is Greg Jackson; I am in Grade 11 at Bishops and am mortal.
I’ve attended the UCT Maths Circle since grade 9, and have been to two
Stellenbosch Camps. If the food really is getting better, then I’m
glad I didn’t go in grade 8. I don’t generally enjoy sport (with the
possible exception of Hiking and Fencing), so I don’t really mind
being called a nerd.
I have no programming experience (was invited through the maths
circle), although I do spend a lot of time on the computer (usually
playing games). I thought programming would be boring. I discovered I
was wrong last Thursday, it’s surprisingly fun.
See you next Thursday!

I'm Ashleigh, grade 11 at Westerford. after looking through the
subjects of the discussions, i picked the one i understood, which, i
guess, makes me mortal :p. in case you hadn't gathered, i have less
than no experience with programming - if experience could be expressed
as a negative value i would fit quite strongly into that category.
I've been involved with the maths circle since grade 9 and been on
Stellenbosch camp once.
General info... i have very little, if any, time for anything due to a
four-legged creature who is 4 years old, bay, a thoroughbred, 15.2hh
and growing (hopefully!) and if you understood what i meant by that,
we are likely to get along fine.

And for those who didn't understand, it means that Ashleigh is a member of that strange, arcane circle of Horse People :)
Greetings.
I am Alexander Borysov. Nickname - LX.
Grade 11 Westerford.
Taught myself C++, am in the process (2nd year) of being taught Java,
and recently, am enduring Python's horrible "bracketlessness".
Using C++ (which is better than Python):
SACO 2007 - 1 question solved
SACO 2008 - 2 questions solved
My name is Arlton Gilbert and im in grade 12 at Star College in
Durban.
I've been to 3 Stellenbosch Maths camps and won a silver at last years
Pan African Maths Olympiads
I only wrote SACO last year and solved 2 &2/3 ( if I just used da word
'long' instead of 'int' it would have been 3). I used Java.
I started learning Python and working on the USACO website but put it
on hold because of Matric and training for other olympiads and the
monthlies from the maths.
I made it to the third round of USACO twice (grade 10 & 11) and I've been to 4 Stellenbosch Camps.
I learnt javascript as it was used in a game engine in grade 6 or 7 (can't remember which). I then learnt C++ in grade 8, java in grade 10. Python I learnt, just before the third round in grade 10.
Python is my fav lang for contests as it's fast to write code up in, I'm saddened by the fact that's it's not allowed for IOI or else I would have used it there too instead of C++.
I'm in matric at De La Salle Holy Cross College in Johannesburg,
so most of you won't be seeing me around.
I taught myself Java in about grade 6 or 7 and I came across the
computer Olympiad by chance in grade 9.
I got 4 questions correct in the second round, but my school didn't
summit the source code, so I was disqualified.
I got through to the third round in 10 and 11.
I learnt Python in grade 11 for the third round and then C++ later
that year. I also know a fair amount of Groovy (A dynamic JVM-based
language).
Besides programming, my interests are maths, physics, spoken languages
and
music and I have a grade 6 in singing and electric guitar.
There isnt much about me thats spectacular, Im in Matric at Rand Park
High this year, I first started programming 3 or 4 years ago and
taught myself Visual Basic, and moved from there to various other
languages. Last year I learnt python for the olympiad but didnt do
particularly well :P I took part in the math olympiad aswell (also for
the first time) last year. I actively take part in a game development
community in my free time, and have no claim to fame yet.
Im looking to learn from others to improve myself.
Wow I've read through some of the above and why am I here??
I have participated in my first SACO last year and did okay and
I also participate in numerous Maths Olympiads where I get through
to the last rounds..
About myself. . I do well in school, my maths is normally at 98% and
my science and IT at 90. I am currently a grade 12 student at
Hoerskool Florida. I am gonna study actuarial sciences next year
but am really interested in programming. Although(don't laugh) I only
know
how to use Delphi and have never been exposed to other languages.. But
I am a hard worker and look forward to learning stuff from you guys!
