Sadly, last Friday the swimming community lost a valuable asset and
friend. Monte Lyons died March 10, 2012 after surviving melanoma brain
cancer for five and a half years. He gave it a good fight and enjoyed
life as much as possible. He was a great family man and sports
enthusiast.
A celebration of his life will take place at St. Anthony Catholic
Church, Wednesday, March 21st at 1 pm with a reception following in
the parish hall.
For those of you who knew him, you know that sports, work and four
kids (Brenda, Jeff, Kerry, & Linda) kept him busy. He was the Alaska
Swimming Chairman for age group swimmers for two years and a master
swimmer himself. He holds records in the 200 free, 100 back, & 200
back. Triathlons, Budlight, Coastal Trail and Big Lake were some of
his favorites. At the East Alaska Club he coached master swimmers for
about 20 years and encouraged them to swim in the State swim meets.
Before coaching at the Alaska Club, Monte founded the team that became
SWAM (originally Sports West Alaska Masters) and was the only lifetime
member of this team. He was awarded the lifetime membership of SWAM in
recognition of all he had done.
We miss him already, Ruth Carter

(Thank you to the family for allowing me to write this post. I copied
part of the obituary, but also wrote a bit of it. My thoughts are with
Carolyn, her daughters and the rest of the family.)
