Hi All,

I'm pleased to announce that Artima has just published a PrePrint
Edition of Akka Concurrency by Derek Wyatt. It is not yet complete,
but is very far along--quite possibly the most complete Akka book out
there so far. Every chapter has been written and copy edited, but we
have formatting, indexing, etc., to do still, as well as another final
edit pass. At this point we'd like to get feedback from readers, so
we're releasing it as a PrePrint. You can submit feedback by clicking
on the Suggest link at the bottom of any page of the PDF.

Currently you can just get the eBook in PDF form, but once it is
released final the same eBook license will enable you to also download
the book in Mobi or ePub form.

We've created a discount coupon for "early birds". Through the end of
October you can get a 20% discount by entering the code AkkaUsers on
your shopping cart page, after placing the PDF eBook or Combo into
your shopping cart.

To get a taste, a sample chapter is available here:

Thanks.

Thanks Bill,

Just in case you missed it, folks... yes, it's a pre-print, so it's not 100% polished, but it's filled with content (20 chapters worth) so you should be able to chew on it for quite some time.

Cheers!
Derek

How does book this compare to the Akka in Action (http://www.manning.com/roestenburg/) book?

The diagrams are way prettier, for sure :)

I honestly haven't read what Manning has.  I do know that these two books have evolved independently, so they should be nicely differentiated and, I expect, both quite valuable resources.

My book tries to focus on the "Why" and the "How", since the Akka reference docs are so high quality.  I'm trying to help people understand how to structure their apps, how to find some "patterns" for development, and so forth.  But I don't know how that compares to Manning's book.

Do the code examples focus on Scala or Java?

I have a chapter on Java (discussing basic differences) but the rest of the book is in Scala.  If I did the code examples in Java, the book would be another 100 pages long :)

I'm glad :)  When you're writing a long book, it helps to throw in some silliness from time to time to keep you sane.

Very cool, this is now the 3rd Akka book that I know of.
Definitely going to read this one!
The sample chapter is great. And the diagrams are awesome :-)

Hi Derek,

This is a great AKKA book. On the related note, what tool was used to create the diagrams?

Thank you!
