IMO, you're making a huge mistake. You are thinking about how your puppy is going to you along with cats, which is obviously important to your decision BUT the problem is not the age your puppy is now, the fights between your Dobe and your puppy will begin at your puppy gets older. As your puppy matures he will naturally challenge the Dobe for top position. There will be fights. If you are not there to supervise, they could be extremely serious. They will be serious fights even if you are there but at least then you will be in a position to (hopefully) stop the fight.

The Welsh and Lakeland are not "small" Airedales. The look like Airedales and are terriers but are individual breeds.

Purebred airedales can be found maturing as small as 45 lbs. If your are looking for a significantly smaller dog, looking into Lakeland or Welsh terriers- as they have the same basic appearance but come in smaller sizes. ;-)

I am interested in an airedale puppy but would prefer a dog that would
not be quite so large. Is there a miniature version or smaller

Hi...My eight month old male Airedale takes deep long drinks, that lasts him
for hours, depending on his activity or the temp. This is my fifth Dale
and they all liked to drink come to think of it. I don't think this should
be a problem.
If in doubt...check with your vet.

Welcome to the group, I have found that mine will drink a great deal if I
feed them cubes, as I feed raw now they dont drink half as much as they did.
