Ayatollah Behjat Returns to His Lord
Verily we are from Allah and to Him do we return. It is with deep
sadness and grief that the AhlulBayt Islamic Mission offers its
condolences to the Imam of our time and the Ummah at large on the
demise of his Eminence Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Taqi Behjat (may Allah
elevate his status).
The Grand Ayatollah who was revered by
millions of followers, passed away in the holy city of Qum. Having
suffered from heart problems, his eminence sadly departed this world
towards the higher abode on Sunday 17th May 2009.
Ayatollah
Muhammad Taqi Behjat was born into a religious and pious family in 1915
in the city of Fuman, located in northern Iran. After completing his
primary education, he began his religious studies and moved to Karbala
at the age of 14. Four years later he moved to the renowned Islamic
seminary of Najaf where he studied under the greatest Shia scholars of
his time including: Grand Ayatollah Abu’l Hasan Isfahani, Grand
Ayatollah Mirza Naeeni and Grand Ayatollah Mirza Muhammad Taqi Shirazi
amongst others. After spending more than a decade in the seminary of
Najaf, he migrated to the holy city of Qum and continued his studies
under Grand Ayatollah Muhammad Husayn Burujordi.
The late
Ayatollah was renowned for his academic brilliance, humility, and lofty
spiritual status. For many years now, he had been an unparalleled
source of knowledge and piety for the Islamic seminary in Qum and its
students; teaching lessons at the highest level for the past 40 years
and thereby training scholars of the finest calibre for future
generations.
In addition to his expertise and being a great
‘Arif (spiritual mystic), the late Ayatollah Behjat was a strong
supporter of the political and social struggle led by Imam Khomeini
against oppression and corruption in Iran.
We request all believers to recite Surat Al-Fatiha and to please remember the late Marja in Salaat Al-Wahsha.
