Wellbeing is a new service for people living in County Durham. If you are
a carer, a new parent, or have a long term health condition, you can join
an activity for free. The NCVO
'Don't Stop the Music' Campaign is against the Government's decision to
make charities and other not for profits pay for a licence when they play
recorded music in their own premises. To date, charitable organisations
have been exempt from these charges and NCVO believes this should
continue. Since the
Intellectual Property Office consulted on this issue last year, NCVO has
been concerned at the disproportionate impact that the proposed changes
will have on a significant number of charities. The new licensing system,
which is due to come into force in April 2010, is estimated to cost the
voluntary and community sector upwards of £20 million. Community groups across the North East are being
encouraged to enter the Green Community Award. The Award, which is part of
the Evening Chronicle's Environment
Awards 2009, is sponsored by SustainNE, the regional champion body for
sustainable development in the North East. SustaiNE hosts Brighter Futures
Together a simple, helpful toolkit for sustainability that is packed full
of ideas for ways to improve neighbourhoods, helping people to make a
happier and stronger future for their community. For

Driving
forward the past
Peterlee based charity East Durham Community Transport is celebrating the mining heritage of East Durham by displaying the Banners and operating dates of East Durham Collieries on its minibus fleet.
Each vehicle has been adorned with the name of a Colliery and the dates that it opened and closed, and also a pictorial representation of the Banner for that Colliery.
Liam Weatherill, Manager of East Durham Community Transport, said “We believe that it is very important to remember and celebrate the mining heritage of the area in which we provide our services. Many of the people that travel on our vehicles worked in the local pits and they are tremendously proud of their heritage and the Colliery villages that they belong to.
We
provide services for many local groups and projects from East Durham and they
travel far and wide using vehicles in our fleet and this small gesture shows
that we are proud to be from East Durham and proud to remember our mining
heritage. ” Small grants of up to
£10,000 are available to groups supporting children and young

Volunteering i-volunteer
is a new online social network that will enable people that care
passionately about their community, either as volunteers or by managing
the work of volunteers, to connect with, learn from, inspire and support
each other in what they are trying to do. i-volunteer also aims to provide
an independent source of comment about all things volunteering in the UK
through commissioned editorial and features, as well as via the posts and
comments made by the i-volunteer community. It offers
many of the tools that you have come to expect from other social networks,
such as individual profiles, groups, posts and features and there is
already a group for those involved in Employer Supported Volunteering and
a number of volunteer centres are setting up their own too. The
Trades Union Congress and Volunteering England have produced a joint
'Charter for Strengthening Relations Between Paid Staff and Volunteers'.
It aims to strengthen the ties between paid staff and volunteers, with the
trade union movement, itself one of the biggest examples of volunteering,
recognising the value that volunteers provide to the economy and wider
society. Visit the TUC web! site for basic
guidance on legal issues and a link to the Charter.
