Charities Face New Charges for Playing Music
The NCVO 'Don't Stop the Music' Campaign is against the Government's decision to make charities and other not for profits pay for a licence when they play recorded music in their own premises. To date, charitable organisations have been exempt from these charges and NCVO believes this should continue.

Since the Intellectual Property Office consulted on this issue last year, NCVO has been concerned at the disproportionate impact that the proposed changes will have on a significant number of charities. The new licensing system, which is due to come into force in April 2010, is estimated to cost the voluntary and community sector upwards of £20 million.

Driving forward the past

Peterlee based charity East Durham Community Transport is celebrating the mining heritage of East Durham by displaying the Banners and operating dates of East Durham Collieries on its minibus fleet.

Each vehicle has been adorned with the name of a Colliery and the dates that it opened and closed, and also a pictorial representation of the Banner for that Colliery.

Liam Weatherill, Manager of East Durham Community Transport, said "We believe that it is very important to remember and celebrate the mining heritage of the area in which we provide our services. Many of the people that travel on our vehicles worked in the local pits and they are tremendously proud of their heritage and the Colliery villages that they belong to.

We provide services for many local groups and projects from East Durham and they travel far and wide using vehicles in our fleet and this small gesture shows that we are proud to be from East Durham and proud to remember our mining heritage. "
