Israel Planning Mass Deportation of Asylum Seekers,
Migrant Workers

Israeli is preparing mass deportations of asylum seekers and migrant
workers in the coming months, deportations to include thousands of
small children born in Israel and who know no other home.
For
this purpose, Israel recently created the Oz “task force,” slated to
focus exclusively on finding, arresting, and deporting migrant workers
and refugees without documents. Earlier this week the task force, which
replaces the previously existing immigration police, detained nearly 90
migrant workers and refugees in Tel Aviv, including some legally
allowed to work in Israel.
In parallel, the Israeli Knesset
is debating new bill that would subject “illegal immigrants” to five
years in prison, while giving seven years to those from “enemy
countries” or countries that aid Israeli defined enemy countries, the
latter which would include refugees fleeing the genocide in Darfur.
Only one Knesset Member, Dov Khenin of the Hadash party,
voted against this proposed legislation to date.

Among activists, lawyers, concerned citizens, refugees, and Knesset
members, Israel’s new proposed bill to sentence illegal immigrants
to at least five years in prison has sparked considerable controversy.
Knesset members sponsoring the bill couch their justifications in
economic terms, citing this as a means of fighting Israel’s rising
unemployment and poverty levels. However, more critical opponents argue
that the round up, arrest, and deportation of non-Jewish refugees and
immigrants is a means for Israel to dodge its humanitarian
responsibilities.
