Subject: Rex Road

the bottom half of Rex Road has been completely rehabilitated.
Today, a layer of crushed rock went down and it really looks good.
I think that there is a small percentage of cement mixed with the rock
so it will get hard when packed and wet.

This note is to the parents, guardians, friends and neighbors of the
young people that like to ride their dirt bikes, 4-wheelers and
all around Jeeps, trucks, Blazers, Broncos, etc. that like to spin
their wheels, burn doughnuts and generally tear up a road.
when it comes to crushed rock on a dirt road, spinning the wheels
of a vehicle breaks up the packed rock and then when it rains ......
all the rock is washed away leaving the road right back to where it was.
With Rex Road being so steep, it will not take a lot of abuse before
it starts to deteriorate.
so please, just educate your kids, and yourself .... of how much work
went into preparing and finishing Rex Road.  The guys in the tractors
have worked non-stop for the past 3 days to accomplish this project and
it really looks GREAT.

Just a heads up if you have small pets, watch them close when they are outside. I let my small dog out to do her morning" business" Thursday and within three minutes I heard terrible screams coming from her. I went running and she was gone. I'm assuming coyotes because I have seen and heard them out here. Not to mention the five cats that we have had go missing in the 12 years we have lived here.

Best regards,
Becky Simmons

Hi I live over on Windy Acres Rd and went out to watch the sunrise on Mothers Day and saw 2 magnificent looking wolves with really tall ears. They are bigger than German  shepherds and silver grey black and red in color. They were long haired and on the husky side one was bigger than the other. They were not afraid. They sat and watched me for about 8-10 minutes about 150 feet from me and the horses. I finally started whoopin and hollering and they ran under the fence and into the tortoise reserve. My husband came running out  and we watched them sit up on the ridge for about another 10 minutes then they just trotted off without a care in the world. I looked them up on line and they looked like red wolves. They could of also been a hybrid wolf dog cross. They didn't seem to be aggressive  I have goats and they didn't seem to be trying to get to them more like out for a morning jog   But they were big   If anyone else sees them let me know   Thanks. May is the month coyotes are having their babies, so they're apt to be more active.  My opinion....Cats who live closely with dogs seem to be the easy targets because the cat thinks they can handle the dog.  In reality, no small animal can handle the coyote.  If your small animal disappears without a trace, it's because they take the bodies back to the den for their young.  I personally have large dogs in my yard and my cat goes out when it gets daylight and comes in well before dark.  These actions come from living in this area for many years.  One neighbor in past years kept a pack of 5 - 7 German Shepherds on their 5 acres to deter coyotes.

We also have a couple of fox in the area of Sandhill and Wendy Acres.

See below a few facts pulled from Florida Fish and Wildlife website.  I hope you find this helpful.

Predation on livestock occurs most frequently in late spring and early summer when adults are feeding pups. The need for food is great at that time and domestic animals are generally easy prey.

Movements--Coyotes are active day or night, but usually most active at sunset and sunrise. Coyote home range sizes vary greatly between individuals. In a southeastern study, home ranges of adult coyotes ranged from 1,500 to 12,000 acres. Coyotes will also kill domestic dogs and house cats.

Coyotes may carry off small animals, such as chickens or new- born goats, leaving only tracks.

Appearance:

The coyote is a member of the dog family, similar in appearance to a medium size shepherd. They weigh between 20 and 30 pounds, have pointed ears, a narrow muzzle, and bushy tail.  Males tend to be larger than females. Pelts are usually grayish-brown, but occasionally black, often with a patch of white chest hair. When running, coyotes usually hold their tails at "half mast." Coyote tracks are narrower and more elongated than dog tracks.

There is no closed season on coyotes in Florida. Legal methods of take are by gun, bow or snare. Steel traps and can be used only by special permit issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, and use of poisons to kill coyotes is illegal.  A permit is not required to take coyote with a gun and light at night on private property with landowner permission.   Indiscriminate killing of coyotes is unlikely to reduce coyote populations, which can withstand 70 percent annual kill. Some evidence suggests that light, indiscriminant harvesting of Coyotes may actually stimulate production and further increase numbers.

Some people like and admire the animal, others vehemently curse everything about it. Treat them as you will, coyotes are survivors.

The coyote is also subject to rabies.

You can receive technical assistance for coyote problems by contacting the FWC regional office nearest you.
888-404-3922  This number covers 12 counties and they can provide a number for a local trapper.

While riding my horse Sunday 11:30 am, I saw one lone coyote South of the end of Sandhill Road coming out the back of Terry and Lori Foresters property.  It came towards me for a ways and then went under the fence into the basin area.  It paused for a moment to look at me and I paused for a moment to look at it.   Not much concern for me except I caused a detour.

That's not the first time I have crossed paths with a lone coyote while riding.  They seem to be mildly intimidated by the size of the horse, but far from frightened.  Both were in the middle of the day.

Good morning!

I've also seen coyotes during the day - frequently - since they are used to humans.  Since I am known for picking up stray dogs and trying to find their owners or give them a good home, I actually slowed down for a "dog" sitting at the edge of a field.  Upon a closer look at the dark-tipped tail, I realized it was a coyote.  Obviously, I didn't try to give it a good home.

The red foxes are "ours."  Rick and I have had two adults living in our field for over a year and this year they had three to four kits.  The kits move in and out of the burrows (old gopher tortoise burrows), so it's sometimes difficult to get an accurate count.  Now that they are older, we have seen the two adults and three kits running across our back field.  We also tentatively identified one dead kit next to our back fence.  We think it may have been killed by an owl or other bird of prey and then the vultures finished it off.

Foxes were introduced to North America in the 1600s by our early English settlers who wanted to hunt foxes.  They normally live about 14 years in captivity, but only a couple of years in the wild.  The fox is not much bigger than a large cat, and are on the lean side with an elongated muzzle and pointed ears.  They are reddish on the back with gray or white on the chest and stomach, with black on the back of the ears and the front of the legs.  The male weighs 8.8 - 17.6 pounds and the female about 8.8 - 13.2 pounds.

Foxes are a protected species and are good to have around, since they will eat rodents and other small animals (rabbits, and, yes, small cats).  After losing a cat to coyotes years ago, I have made my cats stay indoors (they live longer and the bird population is more protected).  The best protection for poultry and other small animals is to secure them properly at night.  The foxes will also eat fruit, invertebrates and birds.  If they kill more than they need for that night, they will cache the rest of the kill for a night when hunting isn't as productive.  This would protect against coyotes, also.  Rabbits are prolific breeders and can do major damage to gardens and crops, so the foxes keep the rabbit population down since they are one of the foxes' favorites.  I love the foxes and hate to see the "cute wittle wabbit" killed, but that's the balance of things.

The fox kits are adorable jumping straight up into the air as they play with each other.  They are out during the early and late hours of the day, but usually stay in the burrow during the heat of the day.  One web site noted in a British survey that more than 90% of people like the fox.  If you are also in that majority and want a closer look at them, you're welcome to stop by - just give me a call.

It has been several years ago that we had foxes around our house.  We have three ferrel cats (that we have had fixed) that we take care of, I can pet them, the food lady, but Billy can't.   The fox would actually come up and eat with the cats as long as I wasn't outside.  So they never seemed to be a big threat to the cats, maybe kittens.  I do miss looking out and seeing them walk thru the yard though.
