Description:
Grieving for a parent, spouse or other loved one who inflicted verbal, sexual or physical abuse can present distinct distress. This session will explore the challenges associated with the conflicting experiences of loss and abuse and provide strategies for supporting clients, families or congregants. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of: 1) How Jewish laws can be observed while feelings of hurt and even relief are prominent; 2) How death of the abuser might impact a survivor; 3) How anger and forgiveness contribute to ultimate healing.

Description:
Navigating the way out of an abusive relationship is seldom easy. In this session, participants will engage in the "In Her Shoes" experiential exercise to reflect on the many challenges and barriers abuse victims face trying to gain safety. Participants will examine: 1) The barriers and challenges individuals experiencing abuse encounter; 2) The specific obstacles that faith, housing, and children may pose to those experiencing abuse; 3) Strategies for working with individuals and families experiencing abuse.

Power, Privilege and Gender: Recognizing Societal Influences

Description:
This presentation will analyze the value various cultures have placed on gender. The harmful role stereotypes play in the perpetration of violence against women and the toll it takes on their well-being will be examined. Participants will gain increased knowledge about: 1) Cultural and societal values that contribute to and perpetuate violence against women; 2) The impact socially constructed gender roles have on gender identity, health and wellness; 3) Concrete ideas of how to become an agent of change.
