I thought your groups would be interested in this as it is Ann Arbor.

Subject: [HIAG] CNC Workshop this summer

Last night at the meeting I mentioned the CNC Workshop hosted by the
publisher of Digital Machinist. I attended the first two years, and had a
great time. I'm going back again this summer.

It's at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, right off US23, June
21-23 (Thu-Sat). The cost is $125 until March 1, and $150 after. In my
opinion, it's a bargain. To register, call (800) 447-7367, and speak with
Kathy, or email George Bulliss, the publisher, at gbull...@villagepress.com.
More information is available on their
forum: http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/forumdisplay.php?f=10

The previous events were four days, Tuesday through Friday; this year is
three days over a weekend, to make it a little easier for the vendors and
attendees who can't take a whole week. There are some vendor displays,
seminars, and demonstrations. Last year, Tormach brought a couple of their
machines, and then sold them at the end of the week at a discount instead of
shipping them back. These are ready- to-go CNC equipment costing several
thousand dollars, and a little big for a home shop, but would be fun in a
real maker shop.

The seminars range from informal talks to tutorials on software.
Tormach ran a class on using SprutCAM. Vectric ran a couple seminars on
their software. A couple of the smaller vendors gave good talks about
electrical safety, pneumatics, and whatnot. There likely won't be a
schedule of talks until you walk in the door, and it will probably change
through the event. If you wanted to organize one on a topic of interest to
you on the spot, that would probably be just fine.

This year they're running another Mini-Mill Build class, where you buy a
manual mini-mill (this one: http://littlemachineshop.com/3960)
and all the parts for the CNC conversion (ballscrews, stepper motors, Gecko
drivers, power supply, etc), and build it over the weekend. You need to
bring your own Windows laptop to run the Mach3 software. The cost should be
around $2,050, which is a slight savings over buying
everything at retail. I'm already signed up for this. If you're
interested, there are only 2 spots left out of ten. Email George at the
address above.

Regards,

Carl
