Has anyone used gears in an enterprise solution - or any solution! I have a requirement for an online/offline application and wondered if it would be a path worth investigating.

Hi Matt

We have been using the MS Sync Framework to cache a remote database to
a local PC (via a secure web service). Obviously this is not the same
as Gears, but if you were just attempting to sync data up between 2
databases then I would highly recommend taking a look at this piece of
technology. The documentation is comprehensive so you have to work
some stuff out for yourself, but it definitely works!

Cheers

Nick.

Hey Matt,

Forgive my ignorance, but does 'off-line' in your enterprise scenario
mean no network whatsoever or only no internet, but intranet still
present?

As a disclamer: I have not used gears at all as a developper, but have
been toying with it as a user of gmail.

best,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

No network whatsoever - it's for a user with a laptop out in the middle of nowhere.

I was originally planning to (and probably still will) use a WPF client on the laptop synching back to base when it can. However I was wondering if gears could be used as I could do a web front end that didn't care if it was off or on and end up with one tool to maintain.

For this project I think gears is a step/learning curve too far.

Matt,

I understand now. I would go for it, for the joy/pain of learning new
stuff, but understand if you are more comfy with WPF.
I have just skimmed through a few API docs and it does not look too
heavy, providing you have done some JavaScript before.

If possible, please share with the group, how did you do it in the end
and what were the major pains and nice surprises.

All the best!

Daniel
