I suggest we write Letters to the Editors of the newspapers, especially
the English newspapers. We should state that while the decision of the
Supreme Court to do something to strike out against the blasphemous
cartoons is admirable in itself, the manner in which this order has
been carried out is totally counter-productive. The same blogspot.com
that hosts some blogs that carried the cartoons also hosts many islamic
blogs as well as many blogs written by muslims who condemned the
cartoons, including the one of this writer.
We should take pains to point out that beyond being an issue of freedom
of expression for the thousands of totally non-blasphemous, and
inoffensive pakistani blogs that blogspot.com hosts, the manner is
which such blanket blocking of of blogspot.com is being effected does
not reflect well on the authorities responsible. This is akin to mowing
your lawn with a thermonuclear weapon. Any attempts at blocking the few
blasphemous sites should not effect the blogs of thousands of people
who have nothing to do with these cartoons, including the many who have
actually condemned the cartoons themselves.
Write, write, write. The more letters that go out there to the
newspapers and appear in the letters to the editor, the faster
blogspot.com will be made availabe to us again unfettered. Contact
columnists in newspapers and ask them to take an interest.
A group of technologically backward people amongst the Powers The Be
really let us down and set the internet community of Pakistan back by
some ten years. This sort of behavior is not acceptable in this day and
age.
So many bloggers are already doing this and I think it is great to set
up a group to get organized. Let me add a link to this group on my
blog.
