Congratulations! The liberal and freedom loving Musharraf regime
cannot survive without emergency powers.

so while cell phone and land lines are now up in Pakistan (just spoke to Awab), cable tv is down along with rumors of the internet being taken down?

ange - thanks for the call - as of this moment Geo.Tv website is DOWN, I suspect the snake will slowly wind its way across to other places as well.

I have as of this moment started displaying this sign as a show of my protest.

God Bless Pakistan

Might I suggest that you leave one instance of your sign and use a
flag of Pakistan with the words "God Bless Pakistan!" aferwards? The
sign truly represents your feelings at the time of the speech, but now
is not the time to be inflammatory. It also does not do justice to
your hard work on behalf of free speech and the stature you have
gained internationally. Additionally, I don't think your quarrel is
with just one person, it is all the people who support the Emergency.
I think it is essential to be proactive going forward, not reactive.

Yes Ange, all these channels are blocked. For news now, we only have
PTV.

I think we must create a campaign where the international community can show support for Pakistan - for the sake of finding a unified website may I suggest the name of Help-Pakistan.com as it will truly reflect the views.

I suggest that graphics be created and then the entire campaign be forwarded to activists world wide so that they too can show support.

I am told that Ange is in the process of setting up a SMS-Blog system which can be used by regular Pakistanis to update the world on what is going on the streets of Pakistan.

Lets try to get this thing off the ground ASAP.

Dear All,

In relation to something that a couple of us are setting up on the sidelines should there be a complete internet blackout imposed, i'd appreciate if there's anyone here who is using twitter, could tell us whether you've been getting incoming messages via sms from your twitter groups over the past week. :)

Thanks,
ange

I set up a twitter account for myself, at http://twitter.com/ko

I was looking for a Twitter feed I could follow for the latest news in case the internet also gets blocked.

I know there are feeds for most of the Pakistani newspapers, but those have too much extra international news - I just want one which sends imp. news updates like "SC Judges reinstated"etc.

In fact, why not create a Pakistani news twitter feed, with a few people from around the world updating it.
http://help.twitter.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=77

I just ordered a Indian satellite tv service today, and that guy was happy, his business has increased 100x in just 2 days! He was working throughout Sunday busy installing satellite dishes (which are very much illegal here).

He also sells satellite internet, but it is far too expensive.

Anyways, some say that local TV will remain blocked for a few more days. There aren't any reports that the internet will be down.

I have been using Twitter for Karachi Metroblog for a few months now
but I have been receiving no sms from twitter over the past week. If
i'm signed in, then i get updates through gtalk but nothing through
sms.

Samar.

Its possible that twitter was blocked out by the mobile operators
themselves.

That would amount to the cellcos in Pakistan being 'too data savvy' which I am not ready to believe :)

I dont know about the rest, but I did face an issue in sending out messages to twitter about 2 months or so ago for a few days.
But it opened up later, and now were not getting messages from twitter again on Ufone.

Whats the status on the other operators?

Good evening All

Thank you for having accepted my application considering the crisis,
I'll briefly say who am I: Claude Almansi, female in spite of my first
name, b. 1952, freelance translator, former language teacher and civil
society activist; cell +41 76 401 85 69 e-mail
claude....@gmail.com. Some more at
http://www.digitaldivide.net/profile/Claude if you wish.

I greatly admire Pakistani activists and have learned a lot from (I
subscribe to http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/pakistanictpolicy/ and
read several Pakistani blogs regularly) So if by being outside the
pale of the martial law I can be of help, I'd be gratefully glad to.
Tell me how.

I had tried to mention in in the comments to
http://karachi.metblogs.com/archives/2007/11/tv_channels_sti.phtml but
the comment isn't up yet. Actually, it would be better if there could
be a post about it, should you decide to join that action.

And whatever you decide, I can post about it in the Digital Divide
Network mailing list, where there are quite a few people actively
engaged in citizen journalism. Or if you wish to join directly:
http://digitaldivide.net/mailman/listinfo/digitaldivide. The News
section of the main site http://www.digitaldivide.net/news/index.php
might also be an echo chamber.

I was also wondering about a tag that could be used on several things:
videos, pics, blogs, del.cio.us. If the internet holds, that is.

Best
