Coral Reef Ecology Volunteer Research and Teaching Internships Summer
2012 - Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean
The CIEE Research Station Bonaire is accepting applications for
volunteer intern positions that will be involved in assisting with the
summer study abroad program for undergraduates on scientific diving
and coral reef ecology as well as field and laboratory research.
Research projects currently underway include trends in populations of
lionfish in Lac bay and the input of sediments and nutrients to the
coral reef on the leeward side of the island. Intern duties include
student logistics, grading, preparing for labs and field trips, field
sampling, sample processing, data entry and analysis, report writing,
record keeping for the dive safety program, and assisting with general
day to day operations at the station. Diving is required for one of
the positions. Interns must have the ability to work as a team member
and be willing to work flexible hours while living on-site at the
research station. The expected weekly time commitment is 40 h and the
intern must commit to a m
inimum of 8 weeks (between 26 May and 15 August 2012).
The internships are strictly voluntary; interns are responsible for
airfare, meals, personal health insurance, and other expenses. CIEE
Research Station Bonaire will provide a shared room with a
kitchenette, wireless internet and private bathroom. Interns are
expected to follow the house rules and to conduct themselves in a
professional manner at all times.
Minimum Qualifications: Have completed at least a BS in
Biology/Zoology/Oceanography or related field of science; current
certifications in First Aid, CPR, DAN Oxygen Rescue, and SCUBA; a
comprehensive dive physical and a driver's license.
