Press Release
American Fisheries Society to Hold 142nd Annual Meeting in the Twin Cities
Minneapolis - St Paul, MN, August 19-23, 2012: AFS will hold its 142nd
annual meeting in the Twin Cities / Minnesota - the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
The meeting will focus on Fisheries Networks: Building Ecological, Social,
and Professional Relationships.
Speakers will present a broad range of topics at the plenary session,
technical symposia, poster sessions, and in continuing education courses.
With 1202 scheduled presentations, conference attendees will have the
opportunity to network with fisheries professionals and students, stay
current on the latest in fisheries science, management, resource policy and
more, all while enjoying the sights and scenes of the Twin Cities and
beyond.
This year's plenary speakers will be Dr. Villy Christensen (Professor at the
UBC Fisheries Centre and Director of the Nippon Foundation - UBC Nereus
Program), Dr. Barbara A. Knuth (Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School
at Cornell University and Professor of Natural Resource Policy), and Dr.
William W. Taylor (who holds a U.S. Presidential appointment as a US
Commissioner (alternate) for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission).
Christensen's talk will be on ecological networks - from who did it to
future food webs and will focus on the important question: will there be
seafood and healthy oceans for future generations? Knuth will address the
necessity of understanding social networks and how to cultivate them toward
improving fisheries management capacity and fostering positive relationships
among stakeholders, managers, and scientists. Taylor will address the issue
of fisheries sustainability: the science and art of coupling human and
natural systems.
Some sample symposia: The Future of Fishing: Leisure, Sport and
Conservation; Missouri and Mississippi River Flooding 2011: Impacts of
Historic Flows on Big River Systems; The Role of Molecular Genetics in
Fisheries Management in the Great Lakes Region; Lake Trout East and West:
What Can We Learn by Comparing Lake Trout Restoration in the Eastern USA to
Lake Trout Suppression in the Western USA; and Great Lakes Fish Communities:
Tales, Lessons, and Futures.
The technical program will be hosted at the RiverCentre in Saint Paul while
other meeting events will take advantage of Minneapolis venues. We invite
you to join us in expanding and strengthening our ecological, social, and
professional relationships centered around our common interest in fisheries,
and in enjoying all that Minnesota can offer! <http://www.afs2012.org>
