NOAA Sponsors Boy Scout Merit Badge in Oceanography

Boy scouts recently participated in oceanography lessons, interactive
exhibits, and demonstrations at NOS's Center for Operational Oceanographic
Products and Services satellite office in Chesapeake, Virginia.
On April 14, NOS's Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and
Services (CO-OPS) hosted an oceanography merit badge class for the Boy
Scouts of America.
Scouts participated in a variety of oceanography lessons, interactive
exhibits, and demonstrations at CO-OPS' satellite office in Chesapeake,
Virginia. Fifty Boy Scouts from across Virginia, ranging from ages 10 to 16,
participated in the program to qualify for their badge.
The oceanography merit badge will help participants complete requirements
for their next rank in the Boy Scouts. The merit badge also reinforces
'Standards of Learning' subjects by providing hands-on experiments and
oceanography lessons that are taught in school.
Old Dominion University sponsors a merit badge day event twice a year, but
the event registration is currently booked seven to eight years in advance.
Last year, CO-OPS hosted its first oceanography merit badge event, helping
to alleviate the university's wait list and providing an opportunity for
scouts to earn a unique badge.
