wildlife recreation in that year. These 90 million Americans spent $145
billion dollars on equipment, trip-related expenses, land ownership/leasing
and conservation. The numbers of hunters and anglers were both up, 9 percent
and 11 percent respectively, from the past survey in 2006 reports the
Wildlife Management Institute; the number of wildlife viewers did not change
from 2006 but increased 9 percent from 2001.

Outbreaks Anticipated Due to Drought

Wildlife disease experts warn that the prolonged drought affecting much of
the nation will likely spur a substantial outbreak of enzootic hemorrhagic
disease (EHD), reports the Wildlife Management Institute. According to
experts at the University of Georgia's Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife
Disease Study (SCWDS), wildlife managers in the entire Missouri River
drainage as well as the Piedmont regions of North Carolina and West Virginia
should prepare to see their white-tailed deer herds "get hammered" by this
year's rash of EHD.

Idaho Fish and Game Engages Thousands in Wildlife Summit

In his opening remarks to the Idaho Wildlife Summit, Governor Butch Otter
enthusiastically said that every citizen in Idaho benefits from the presence
of fish and wildlife in the state, and that it's time for all Idahoans to
share in both charting the course - and bearing the cost - of conservation
in the state, reports the Wildlife Management Institute. With that
background, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDF&G) used a combination
of professional facilitation, inspirational speakers, video technology and
instant public input to engage thousands of residents in a lively dialog
about the future of fish and wildlife management.

Cooperative Habitat Project Receives Prestigious Award

The Johns River Basin in northern New Hampshire was recently recognized as a
working forest project that provides an excellent example of people and
organizations collaborating to support conservation and forest stewardship.
In a ceremony that took place in August, the ambitious habitat restoration
project led by Wagner Forest Management received the prestigious Two Chiefs'
Award, bestowed by the heads of the U.S. Forest Service and the Natural
Resources Conservation Service for "the very best partnerships and projects
occurring across the country."  A joint press release from the two agencies
cites key attributes of the Wagner project as "improving dense softwood and
aspen-birch habitats" and avoiding "soil erosion and sedimentation of
surface waters and wetlands."

conservation on private lands, reports the Wildlife Management Institute.
The voluntary program has focused on developing cooperative, short-term
conservation agreements that provide financial and technical assistance to
private landowners.  Since its beginning in 1987, the program's staff has
worked with 44,000 landowners and more than 3,000 partner organizations to
restore and enhance 9,200 miles of stream habitat, 1.26 million acres of
wetlands and 3.24 million acres of upland habitat.
