Welcome to the African Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFROEM) list. This is a limited email list designed to foster communications on occupational safety and health (OSH) issues between African OSH professionals in Africa and those in USA as it pertains to Africa/Africans. It is aimed at professionals working in the field such as physicians, industrial/occupational hygienists, nurses etc. Others with expertise and appropriate interest in promoting knowledge in the field of OSH are invited to join the list.

This is a PROFESSIONAL forum with the aim of:

§          Providing a free and voluntary e-forum for OSH professionals

§          Providing a forum for sharing experiences and best practices in OSH with the intent to improve workers’ and environmental health in Africa

§          Assisting OSH practitioners in accessing materials and resources required for learning and research

§          Providing a forum for generating and packaging ideas on moving the practice of OSH forward in Africa

§           Providing an avenue for sharing and dissemination of news/info on workshops, conferences and publications if pertinent to the purpose of the forum

§           Providing a forum where job opportunities may be posted, but only from the actual employer or his/her representative, not from commercial head-hunters or placement agencies

§           Providing a forum where requests for collaborators, research or business, could be made

Although this is a moderated list, the postings may not always be reviewed before it is sent to the list. It is therefore imperative that the tone and content be kept professional and friendly. When members disagree with one another, this should be conveyed in a FORMAL tone, similar to published letters to journal editors. The moderator reserves the right to remove anyone from the list who does not post with such spirit.

Note that anonymous postings are NOT allowed. Please include your title, affiliation and appropriate subject on any postings. The disclosure of the title and profession of the requester will allow answers to queries to be more appropriate and specific.

The following are forbidden:

§          Non-professional queries

§          Confidential information. There is no advantage in including identifiers of the patient, the employer, or other clinicians involved in the specific situation. When such rules of confidentiality are violated, any consequences are the responsibility of each message's author, and not the forum's moderator or the host of the software where it is managed.

§          Advertisement or commercial promotions, of supplies, services, software or any material, even where the list would seem to be an ideal market audience.  Those with commercial interests may provide rare, brief, professional, factual responsive messages (to actual topics initiated by other forum participants), but should limit their self-promotion to disclosing their affiliation and providing contact information at the end of their message.

§          Solicitation of donations, in cash or kind

§          Politicking.

Please let us be mindful of colleagues with limited bandwidth or mailbox sizes. Postings should be succinct and precise. Providing a summary and the full URL are preferred for articles available on the web. Mail attachments are HIGHLY discouraged.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in becoming a part of this list, please send me the email address of the individual or have them email me with a request to subscribe.

Thank you for your interest in improving the health of African workers and our environment.
