When I try to use the email icon within Office 2007 to send a file,
nothing happens. The icon "looks" active (ie: it is not greyed out)
but it doesn't do anything when you click it.

I made sure to make Affixa the default mail handler for the system but
no go. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

Before we get on to Office 2007 applications specifically, could I ask
you to do a more generic test so I can determine the range of the
problem?

1. Find a file in "My Documents"
2. Right click on it and choose "Send To > Mail Recipient".

Does this launch Affixa?

If not, can you tell me which version of Windows you have?

All the best,

Chris

Hello Chris,

I tried what you suggested and yes, this does launch Affixa and it
saves the email as an attachment to my drafts folder. Just in case it
helps, I'm running Vista Business Edition as my OS.

Hi Grant,

I'm not sure what could be going on there. I'd guess it's an Office
problem since Affixa's running fine elsewhere. Affixa is started using
something called MAPI - both Windows and Office use this, so the
behaviour *should* be the same.

Maybe try a Repair of Office and see if it improves things?

All the best,

Chris

Does Affixa use any ".Net" libraries in order take advantage of the
emailing capabilities of Office? I don't have any installed on my
machine at present.

Yes, Affixa does use .NET 2.0, though you must have it installed as
Affixa will not run at all without it. In fact, the installer won't
allow you to proceed without it.

Did you have any luck with the repair of Office?

All the best,

Chris

I did a repair of office and now the button is completely greyed out :
(. I even tried to see if any add-ins we disabled in office and it
doesn't show any. I'm going to try and reinstall Affixa to see if
this helps.

Thanks for your help and feel free to forward along any other
suggestions to get this to work.

Grant,

I must confess that I'm a bit stumped at this point. The fact it works
from Windows suggests it should be set up correctly, so why Office is
behaving as it is, I'm really not sure.

Leave it with me and I'll see if something comes to mind. Really sorry
not to have a more useful answer at this point!

Oh yes, and to add to my previous point I'm running the latest version
of Affixa (Feb 3 update). I'm gonna take a look on the web to see if
anyone else is having this issue. If I find any tips / solutions,
I'll be sure to post back here.

Thanks again for your help.

I can confirm this. Vista Home Premium and Office 2007, latest Affixa
as of Feb 3. Works in all other Windows apps that takes advantage of
mailto protocol but inside Office 2007 apps the button to Send Email
is grayed out. I just resort to Google Docs for now and share with my
compadres that way. Maybe Office 2007 uses something else?

I solved it. Send Email function in Office 2007 is utterly disabled if
you don't install Outlook. I installed Outlook, reset Affixa as
default mail app and Send Email now works just fine.

Hi strang,

This is one way to do it but I found another way for those people
(including myself) who do not want to have Outlook installed on their
machines - sitting there taking up space and not being used. After
all, isn't the whole point of why we are all using webmail / Affixa in
the first place?

There is a Microsoft article that shows how to "re-enable" the send
email icon without having to install Outlook. Here are the details
pasted below. I've included a few URLs at the end of this post as
attribution to the original person who found the solution and the
official MS reference for anyone who wants to take a look.

One other note before this will work: Reboot your machine after
following these instructions.

Method 2: Verify the registry settings
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you
how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if
you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you
follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the
registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a
problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore
the registry, click the following article number to view the article
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/
kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

1. Close all programs.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then
click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem
4. Locate the following registry values. Typically, these values
are listed in the Windows Messaging Subsystem key.
Collapse this table
Expand this table
Name Type Data
MAPI REG_SZ 1
CMC REG_SZ 1
CMCDLLNAME REG_SZ Mapi.dll
CMCDLLNAME32 REG_SZ Mapi32.dll
MAPIX REG_SZ 1
MAPIXVER REG_SZ 1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging REG_SZ 1
5. If any of these registry values are missing, follow these steps
to add the values:
1. Click the Windows Messaging Subsystem subkey, point to New
on the Edit menu, and then click String Value.
2. Type the name of the missing value, and then press ENTER.
3. Click the new value, and then click Modify on the Edit
menu.
4. In the Edit String dialog box, type the correct value for
the missing string value in the Value data box.
5. Repeat steps 6a - 6d for each value that is missing from
the table that is in step 4.
6. On the File menu, click Exit.

Typically, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Word 2007 display the
correct e-mail options automatically when the required registry keys
are present. If these programs do not display the e-mail options after
you use the methods described here, add the e-mail options to these
programs. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the File menu, click Program Name Options.
2. Click Customization, and then click All commands in the Commands
list.
3. Click the command that you want, and then click Add to add the
command to the Quick Access toolbar. For example, click Send for
Review, and then click Add to add the Send for Review command to the
toolbar.
4. Click OK.
