Subject: Insertion Tags
Hello,

I've been trying to find a list of some sort that shows all available
dynamic url tags. I find them really useful, and I'm sure others do
too. I just don't get why there's no "master list", or why google
makes this hard to find (maybe it's just me :))

I was hoping to get some help or links to known tags. I've found the
following, and I would like to know what others are there?

{ifsearch:GoogleAdWordsSearch}
{ifcontent:GoogleAdWordsContent}
{keyword}
{creative}
{placement}

Please let me know if you know of others.

Thank you!

Hi webberdev,

I was all prepared to swoop down and grant your wish, and then I
realized you've already discovered all the tags that I know of! Good
sleuthing!

Here's the list again:

{ifsearch:search}
{ifcontent:content}
{placement}
{creative}
{keyword}

What's after the colon doesn't matter, it's just to help you identify
what you're looking at.

Can you describe what each of the following tags do?  Are they only to
be used in the URL or can they be used in the description lines as
well?

Hi JasonR704,

The tags listed above are used for the destination URL (either at the
ad creative-level, or the keyword-level, though we recommend just
using it in the creative-level for scalability). For description
lines, use Keyword Insertion, which comes in the form {Keyword:
'Default Text'}. I'll give descriptions and examples for both types of
insertions.

--- Dynamic Parameters for URLs ---

Please note that much of the data these parameters track are already
tracked and available in the AdWords Report Center and Google
Analytics. However, you might want to use these parameters if you have
your own reporting method and want more control and visibility into
the source of your traffic.

1) Value Track - Search Vs Content

Value Track allows you to dynamically insert parameters into the
string that will differentiate between ads shown in the Search or
Content Network.

For example, {ifsearch:search}{ifcontent:content} will embed any
variable into the string you choose that is place after the colon ":"
when the ad shows on one of the two networks.

2) Site Targeting Placement

Add &site={placement} to your Destination URL to show which website an
ad showed on.

3) Creative ID

Using &adused={creative} will put the creative ID of the ad that was
shown in the URL.

NOTE: All Placeholder information is negotiable.

Example: instead of &site={placement} you could use
&shown_on={placement}

With dynamic insertion you are free to enter anything like
kwd={keyword} or k={keyword}. Dynamic insertion is only looking for
the curly brace and inserting the value regardless of the
placeholders.

Full URL Examples:
-------------------------------

http://www.ouradvertiser.com/buy12?target={Keyword}&type={ifsearch:search}{ifcontent:content}&site={placement}

- Would turn a search query on keyword "dvd burner" into:

http://www.ouradvertiser.com/buy12?target=dvd+burner&type=search

- Would turn a content impression on www.davesdvdcenter.com into:

http://www.ouradvertiser.com/buy12?target={Keyword}&type=content&site=www.davesdvdcenter.com

--- Keyword Insertion ---

Keyword Insertion is used to replace text in your ad creative with the
value of the keyword that was queried by the user. Keyword insertion
must be in the form {Keyword: 'Default Text'}, where 'Default Text' is
what you want to appear in your ad if the keyword that would have
replaced it is too long for the line.

Example:

Get Your {KeyWord:Alien T-shirt}
Huge selection of t-shirts. Great prices.
{Keyword:Alien T-shirts} in stock. Free shipping!
www.MyAlienTees.com

If someone searched on your keyword 'Strange Tees,' he will see:

Get Your Strange Tees
Huge selection of t-shirts. Great prices.
Strange Tees in stock. Free shipping!
www.MyAlienTees.com

If someone searched on you keyword 'Super Extra Large Neon Green Alien
T-Shirt,' the keyword would cause the description to exceed the
character limit and the ad will show the default text:

Get Your Alien T-shirt
Huge selection of t-shirts. Great prices.
Alien T-shirts in stock. Free shipping!
www.MyAlienTees.com

Please use this feature with discretion, this is not a replacement for
a well-organized account with well-thought out keyword/ad pairings!

For a much more comprehensive tutorial on how to use Keyword
Insertion, visit http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=74996&hl=en_US

Whew! Hope that helps!

Subject: Re: Insertion Tags
Hi AdWordsPro.Steph.  Thanks for the detailed response.  I think that
will help many AdWords users.

I find the {keyword} parameter is very useful for refining keywords
lists.  It's important to note that it inserts into the URL the
keyword in the ad group that triggered the ad and *not* the raw
keyword the person searched with.  This forces advertisers to look at
both the referring URL and the landing page URL to get the full
picture.  If there is any internal discussion to add parameters, it
would be helpful to have a new parameter that passes along the raw
keyword search as well as one for the match type.

BTW, this is what the Yahoo Search Marketing tracking passes along.
These are some of the fields they pass:

OVRAW - raw keyword search
OVKEY - keyword from account
OVMTC - match type

The AdWords {keyword} parameter is equivalent to the OVKEY value.
This kind of tracking is very helpful when working on custom
tracking.  Example:

www.apogee-web-consulting.com/tools/track_yahoo_search_ads.html

It is not necessary to examine the referring URL when tracking Yahoo
ad clicks.  For Google ad clicks, it is necessary to parse the
referring URL.  That URL is not always present in log files and some
of the search network partners format the URLs in odd ways, so it is a
more tedious job to write custom tracking scripts.

Anyway, back to my original point.  Knowing that the {keyword}
parameter supplies the ad group keyword, this can be comparing to the
raw keyword search in the referring URL to see how broad matches are
being implemented.  Theoretical example:

destination URL tracking:  ?kw=purple%20flowers
referring search URL:  google.com/search?q=pink+flowers

IOW, it's necessary to examine *both* the destination URL and the
referring URL in order to understand how broad matches are working.
BTW, this example is based on the following AdWords help page:

http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=68074

I should also point out that if the search query performance report
had complete data, there'd be less of a need to track via other
means.  ;-)

Thanks Steph-

I am seeking further clarity on this example:

>>- Would turn a content impression on www.davesdvdcenter.com into:

>>http://www.ouradvertiser.com/buy12?target={Keyword}&type=content&site=www.davesdvdcenter.com

Are there any situations where you would get anything other than just
a hostname?  Is placement just
the hostname part of the URL or would it also include the specific
page on the site.  Is this something that
might change in the future?

Thanks!

-Hugh

And, another related question, can you embed one tag in the other,
like:

{ifcontent:contentsrc={placement}}
