I think you should consider whether you are using the right match
types to their fullest extent. We tend to use a combination of broad,
phrase and exact match - Google chooses the most restrictive
automatically.

One big reason is that you can use dynamic keyword insertion with
exact match (and sometimes with phrase match) and that can

Some of the lowest performing keywords in my campaign (in terms of
CTR) are coincidentally the highest converting. These low CTRs are
killing my quality scores and I'm paying the maxim CPC. My automatic
reaction would be to increase the bids on these keywords in efforts to
boost my CTR. Or do I do nothing and continue reaping the benefits of

Richard, thanks for the reply. I think I already knew (or discovered
that in the past - perhaps from your blog) as I already have parked
domains excluded in every campaign but 2 and in those 2 the stats for
parked domains for the same period as the report show 0 impressions.
The 4 adgroups reported in the placement report were all in campaigns

 Hi Martin,

I'll answer #2. This is *very* important for all AdWords advertisers
to understand. IMHO, Google has a serious design flaw on their
hands. Despite the fact that site exclusion is a content network
tool, that is what you need to use to block parked domains on the
*search* network. Details:

 Hi,

I have struggled with the content network for years now, only dabbling
a bit in content-network-only campaigns but decided recently to get to
the bottom of some of the issues I'm seeing. I get ok conversions
(reported by google) via the content network but so much of the
placement report and the way the content network seems to work does

Sarah, sorry to bother with another question. In the above cats/
kittens example, would the presence of the "kitten" keywords, in the
same adgroup, lessen the quality of the "cat" keywords?

The reason for me asking this is that we sometimes wonder if Google
considers a word to be related, or to which extent (e.g., "kitten" and

 Hello.

I've been helping a friend with some Adwords campaigns that we
launched about a week ago. CTRs
have been OK, but I observe that the campaigns targeted for the
domain's country alone have risen their quality scores quickly, while

 Hi DeLarge,

From what you are describing, I would guess that your ads still need
to be approved. We try to review all ads within 48 hours of
submission, but, especially with image ads, the process can be slower.
With text ads, a lot of the review process is automated; however,
image ads have to be manually approved which can take longer. I would

In your opinion, is the Budget Optimizer or the Manual maximum bidding
better to use? If my CPC is over $1.00 using the Budget Optimizer, is
that too much to be paying?

Also: I do see my ads coming up in my small local city area. Are the
clicks more expensive if you choose a larger city area? ~Thank you,

 Hi Shammy,

Im not sure I entirely understand the question, but I can certainly
take a stab at it. If you are running ads and then edit them, you
usually see a drop in traffic for two reasons. First, the ads need to
be approved again (any edit automatically resubmits them for
approval). This usually takes around 48 hours, so if you are still
