Hi

Is it possible for the magnetic lasso to function as an open line rather than a closed loop?

Many thanks
Andy

Did you ever see an open lasso? It wouldn't work!

The point of the selection tools is to enclose an area of the image.

You need the pen tool for "lines".

Exactly. If you need straight lines, draw a path, then stroke it with whatever brush you like. The only other alternative would be the line from the shape tool used consecutively. If neither tools provide what you need --> Adobe Illustrator is your friend.

I suppose an open lasso is a strange concept. :)

I was after something which used the magnetic properties of the lasso ie. it clings to edges, but which was open, ie. the ends are tethered and it forms a path between the two ends. The key thing is the automatic clinging to edges close to where the mouse is traced. Can Illustrator do this?

Don't know, but InDesign can.

However, you should investigate (and practice!) with the Quick Selection tool. That will detect edges
