Do you get the same thing opening the file directly or just when using it as a preset?
I think you're hitting an import limitation stemming from a format specification change. I'm looking for Adobe documentation on the subject.
After you import the DAE and then set the material Opacity to 100%, go to 3D> Export 3D Layer... Save this out as a DAE. Now see if this imports with Opacity at 100%.
For the texture wrapping (picture on shape), this is controlled by the UV mapping and setup is very dependent on the shape of the model and what you want to accomplish. The canned presets have been mapped using a 3D modeler. For some more background on Ps usage try this link:

Thanks for the schooner info. Now I know the name of the ship on the Canadian dime.
Below is a link speaking to the opacity problem and a script that you find useful.

As for more presets, we don't have anymore to download unfortunately. You can use 3D> Export 3D Layer... Save this out as a DAE and place the output in to your Preset> Meshes folder as you discovered. Only DAE files will show up in the 'New Shape From Layer' menu. Unfortunately, Ps CS4 doesn't have a robust UV map editor. You may want to ask over at SketchUp about UV editing; maybe they have a plug-in to help out.
cheers,
