epson 4870 not recognised

Yet another issue. My scanner, Epson 4870, is not in the import section in CS4. It's there for CS3. Instead I get a basic low tech wia option - which is ,well, too low tech for any practical use.

Does CS4 see your scanners?

The scanner will load up separately and I can still scan but it won't import into photoshop cs4.....any ideas?

Sounds like a simple TWAIN cache issue. Have you attempted to clean out the cache in your Windows System directory and any additional references in your Local Settings/ Temp dir? Might be worth a try. also try to re-install the scanner driver, if it's not too much trouble.

Also, see if you can scan into your Windows Photo Gallery, save and open in Photoshop from there. That's a workaround I found on the net when I was having scanner issues a few weeks back.

Thanks DeerRaven. I can do that and it's a good workaround. It would be nice to just scan through PS though. CS3 is fine - CS4 only shows WIA . :(

Mmh, but even in 64bit you should have the option to scan using WIA...

Yes, I can use WIA but the scan section for the 4870 is too basic and I need to have scans enlarged with exact dimentions/ppi/etc as I'm layering them over one another and they must be registered properly....I can only adjust the ppi with WIA.

No biggie. I will use 32bit for that until the drivers are sorted or there's a patch.

Many people prefer to scan outside Photoshop anyway using "Epson Scan" standalone or Silverfast, which is in the bundle.

Epson Scan gives you the same options you get in PS but doesn't tie up PS, so you can get on with other things.

There is no 64 bit TWAIN API so there will be no 64 bit TWAIN plugin.

I have the same scanner and am using PSCS4 64-bit. Here is my response from Epson tech support:

"The version of the TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.04A that is installed on your PC is already Windows Vista 64-bit Edition
compatible, (epson12180.exe).

You said your scanner works stand-alone through the Epson Scan utility, then everything is working fine on our side!

Our Scanner and the software is (sic) TWAIN compliant.

Right now it looks like there is a TWAIN compliant limitation in CS4, this is not an Epson issue, it is a matter for Adobe.

If you having issues running a function in Photoshop please call Adobe.

In the mean time we are looking into it, if we find there is an issue we will ask Adobe to look in to it as well."

I, too, would prefer to scan via the import function in Photoshop rather than use the stand-along function.

Are we seeing finger-pointing in regard to solving this problem?

What recourse does the regular Photoshop user have? I understand not haveng plug-ins available which are not yet ready for 64-bit, but this Epson scan issue doesn't seem to be the same problem.

How can this be fixed?

There is not, and will not be TWAIN support on 64 bit Windows - because there is no TWAIN standard for 64 bit Windows. Photoshop cannot support a standard that does not exist.

I don't understand the problem, is there some core support that windows itself doesn't have that doesn't allow photoshop 64bit to use the scanner, or are none of the shipping scanners using TWAIN 2.0?

Or at the time Photoshop CS4 was release maybe there was no TWAIN 2.0? TWAIN 2.0 was release on Feb 22 2008

Sigh. That TWAIN 2.0 spec. says November 2008. Which is odd, since I'm supposed to be on the TWAIN mailing lists and haven't heard anything from them in over 3 years (maybe longer, but my mail that far back is archived). We'll have to look into it.

I would just like to chime in that there be attention paid to 64-bit solutions associated with Adobe products. I have a desktop and a notebook running on Windows Ultimate 64-bit for the sole purpose of utilizing 8GB of RAM with Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2. Not having all plug-ins with the 64-bit OS is rather painful.

If you are running PS CS4 on an Intel Mac and have placed the Twain plugin supplied from Adobe into the Plugins/Import-Export folder, running Photoshop in Rosetta should allow you to see your scanner in the File/Import menu.

To run under Rosetta, click the CS4 icon and do a Get Info (Command I). Click the box in the General section that says Open in Rosetta. Restart PS if it happens to already be running.

Lynnea - You have all the CS4 plugins for 64 bit. Adobe can't do anything about your third party plugins for 64 bit.

It appears this discussion has gone off on a Twain tangent, I to have the Epson Perfection 4870 and can not get it to work directly with CS4 even though it works great in CS3. Did anyone find a solution?

I am annoyed that I can't use my epson perfection 4870 scanner with Photoshop in the 64 bit mode. Adobe is saying not us..... and Epson is saying the same- Epson even has the drivers listed .... but they go nowhere in the 64 bit mode. Seems to me like Mr. Twain and Adobe and Microsoft need to talk. This problem needs solving. And I'll be sure to let my extensive photogroup know and suggest that they avoid upgrading until its fixed.

TWAIN spoke and said "No 64 bit, not ever."
Then someone at TWAIN apparently decided to support 64 bit and didn't tell anyone until after Photoshop shipped. (and didn't discuss it on the existing mailing lists, or ....)

Sigh.

Just use the app supplied with the scanner - you'll be happier in the long run.

Take Chris's advice.

All you do by importing through Photoshop is tie up the application while it uses exactly the same software that the scanner manufacturer provided as a stand-alone utility.

There's one difference though. Scanning externally forces you to save the scanned image into a file, with often limited format choices.

Scanning from the Import menu "pulls" the pixels into PS, and then you have the choices that PS offers.

I like it hat way, if there's only one or two images to do. Batching is another story of course.
