i have a separate hard drive being used just for photoshop's scratch
memory and have devoted 70% of free memory to photoshop (i'm running 4
gigs in windows xp pro) ....
i have turned off almost all ongoing programs (anti-virus etc) which
indeed does help ....
any suggestions to provide more scratch memory?

With XP - this only handles up to about 3Gb of ram anyway so it can't
use all anyway. Go into your Control panel, System, Advanced,
performance options, Advanced, (at bottom) Virtual memory Change. This
will give you more available virtual memory and resolve your problem.
You can also allocate more memory into your system by altering your
Boot.ini file. This can cause boot problems but there is an item up on
MS knowledge base on how this is done.
