CS4 hand tool slow compared to CS3?

If I use the hand tool to "slide" and image under CS3, the image movement is very smooth and without a glitch. If I use the same hand tool under CS4, the image movement is jumpy and erratic. There does not seem to be any "use hardware acceleration" option as is available in bridge.

I find this makes it rather difficult to move the image quickly and smoothly while I edit a large image looking for flaws (for example, dust spots on scanned negatives).

Has any one else noticed this problem?

Yes, I'm getting a message that I either need to upgrade my graphics card or replace it altogether and that my GPU Hardware Accelerator has been disabled by Photoshop.

I uploaded a more contemporary driver, still same problem.

Really wish I knew what the h*ll I was doing.

This is odd. On my system, with GPU support activated on an Nvidia Quadro FX3450, the hand tool effect is ballistic, and I mean literally. A quick flick of the mouse throws the image across the screen. Very smooth and quick, but not exactly useful. It's rather like the image is sitting on a frictionless surface.

Surely the image should only move the same distance as the hand, or is this some cool new feature that I have missed the point of?

Has anyone else noticed this?

A cool new feature (or not, depending on your point of view).

It does allow for moving the image further than a single screen width in just one 'flick'.

I have found it of some use I have to say...

Anthony.

I guess so, though most of the time I just want to move the working image so that an adjacent area fills the screen. The navigator already provides a quick means of navigating much larger distances. Perhaps this new feature is a plus, and just takes a bit of getting used to.

Can it be turned off, or some 'friction' applied, if one cannot live with it?

The amount of swoosh is proportional to the distance you move the hand cursor.

Still with the Hand Tool, pressing the "H" key and holding down the mouse button is 1000 times better than the bloody Navigator.

Get with it you guys.

Actually it's quite a good feature, once you work out how it works.

However, it would be rather less than useful if your system suffers from lag or erratic behaviour, (which is were this thread started)!

I too am having a problem with jumpy images. Video card NVidia GeForce GTS. could this be the problem. No problem with CS3.

On my PC panning with the hand tool ist stuttering (maybe at about 10fps). The strange thing is that sometimes it does not stutter at all and is absolutely smooth! That sometimes happens if I`ve been retouching a single channel for a while. If I go back then to the RGB channel it`s still smooth. That does not happen always, though.
I`m on Vista32 bit, Geforce 8600GT/512MB,Q6600, 4GB.

There are various useful preferences which may be able to help you guys… under General there are various preferences including zoom and "flick panning" - you can also turn off Open GL altogether under "performance"

Mark,
I do want flick-panning, so I have to turn it (and OpenGL) on. Problem is....it`s stuttering.

Thats most probably a problem with your graphics card unfortunately. Some of the drivers haven't been updated by the card manufacturers yet. There are glitches with a few cards I've seen

My problem still persists. Graphics 8800gt with latest update. 4 g memory( even though PS only uses 2g). Very large scratch disk. this is a major glitch.

Just turn off flick panning.

Thanks for the suggestion Justin,
Tried it, unfortunately, to no avail.
