Photoshop 7 Fails to Install WIN XP SP3

Hi:

I can not get a new in the box version of PS 7 to install on WIN XP SP3.
Using D:\Photoshop\Setup.exe sometimes nothing happens, then 10 minutes later the opening screen shows up, click NEXT, then accept the T&Cs, then the progress bar shows no progress. <CTRL><ALT> shows not responding.

There are a couple of FAQs relating to permissions. This computer has a single user and in Control Panel - User Accounts - this account is the administrator.

Please help since Adobe does not support this product.

empty out the temp folders, copy the photoshop folder from the disc to the desktop. restart the system in safe mode (f8 before the windows logo comes up) and run setup.exe from the photoshop folder on the desktop.

Yes, that's what they said on the phone. Only Photoshop Essentials 7 or Photoshop.com have support. I searched the adobe web pages and can not find PS7 listed.

I have disabled Norton AntiVirius so that's not the issue.

Last night I also searched the registry for "photoshop" and found dozens of entries for PS5 and suspect that there's many more registry entries that need to be cleaned. Next I'll look for a PS registry cleaner.

I think you missed my point...Photoshop 7 hasn't been sold through
legitimate retailers for about 6 or 7 years.

There's a high likihood that you've got a pirated copy.

It's possible but not likely. It's the retail shrink wrapped box and I'm able to register the serial number on the Adobe web site. I think I can get Adobe support for installation but only M-F 6-5 Pacific time at 800 642-3623.

Is PS7 compatible with WIN XP SP3?

There is no support for PS 7 at all. This is because it is from 2002.

Try creating a new admin account on the same computer

Control Panel>User Accounts

Make sure it has Admin Privileges and try to install from that user.

It's the retail shrink wrapped box and I'm able to register the serial
number on the Adobe web site.

Pirates have shrink wrap thingys now. and if you can't install it how do you know you can register it?

Also PS7 is not even in the Upgrade path for the newest version CS4.

THE ANSWER

In order to get into Safe Mode I needed to remove my USB keyboard and mouse and replace them with the PS2 interface versions. Note: to get into Safe Mode you can:
1) press F8 just at the end of the BIOS, but this only works with a PS2 keyboard on older computers.
2) Modify the Boot.ini file to include a second operating system, namely Safe Mode, but this only works if the up/down keyboard keys are operational.
3) Modify msconfig for Safe Mode boot. This does allow getting into Safe Mode and there you can run Photoshop 7 setup.exe from the C: drive, but you can NOT fill in the serial number with a USB keyboard. Once the PS2 inputs were in place the install worked fine.

When PS7 was run the first time it suggested that the scratch file for PS should be on a separate drive from Windows cache, so that's on the list of things to do.

There may be a difference between running in my normal mode where I'm the only user AND have administrator privileges and running in Safe Mode.

I know it can be registered because it did it.
Note you can register a product from the Support Portal web page directly without having it installed on your computer. I did that since in order to get install support you first need to have your product registered. But after a successful registration it still did not show up, maybe I needed to wait longer for their computer to update.

In any case after getting PS7 installed and running the first time I took the registration option and there could see all my registered Adobe software.

noperino. i'm using usb2 keyboard and mouse and they both work fine. might be a bios thing on your mobo. i'm using an intel 975bx. it should work without drivers if you have it set up right.

oh, don't forget to install the 7.01 update that IS still available on the photoshop download page (or was, last i checked about a month back). there's lots of bug fixes in there... ;)

New admin would have fixed that, and that's exactly why Safe Mode worked.

Also, repeating your an Admin on the computer is kind of redundant. You have to BE and admin to CREATE an admin, and that's what we were asking you to do.

Additionally, you are NOT the only user on the computer. That is why this worked. You may be the only use that shows up on the log-in screen, but there is a background user called "Administrator". That is the user that you log onto when going into Safe Boot, which is why it suddenly worked.

She would have been presented with Administrator and then her user name. Regardless, I have seen this issue before and it's resolved by new user account. I'm just going to guess she probably logged into the one that said "Administrator".

Next time you see an issue with the Setup not starting. Suggest new user account. Works every time.

it's resolved by a new account because that new user will get a new (empty) temp folder. my bet is there were old install files in her temp folder that were interfering with ps' setup process. that's what cured it, not the logging in in safe mode. that was just a precaution.

of course. for the reason i just gave. ;) and for lots of people, it's a pita to create a new user account every time something goes wonky. :) there are setups and defaults that go with the user accounts. to recreate all of that can sometimes take as long as a fresh format would do, depending on how long you've been using that particular account.

Okay, I can see how that could resolve the issue.

So let me ask this:
a) Would going into the same user in Safe Mode have fixed it? I'm pretty sure all the temp files remain even in Safe Mode.
b) I gave up on clearing temp folders a long time ago because of a lack of results. Explain to me the steps of clearing temp folders, maybe I've always done it wrong. However I have seen some success with grabbing the hidden Install Wizard folder and dragging it to the desktop, doing the install, the putting it back.

I think the reason for creating new users is simply because the question "why?" doesn't actually matter. The way I see it, just get on a new admin install the thing, then delete the user. Who cares "why?" if it works, right?

not alone, unless the problem was with a component instead of an installer confusion in the temp folder.

I usually leave mine alone too- well every now and then. just delete all the files from them you can (c:\docs & settings\user\local settings\temp, c:\temp, c:\windows\temp)

usually there's no problem but occasionally an installer will leave part of itself in temp where by odd coincidence (or not so odd, because there are relatively few install apps that systems use - wise and install shield probably 2 of the most used) has a file that's got the same name as one the new installer expects. so it starts reading from that one instead. now the whole install gets screwy.

yes, me too. saves time when troubleshooting and the app that fails to install keeps deleting the install files! :)

oh, i misunderstood. i thought you were advocating KEEPING that new admin user as the main user. that's what i mean is a pita having to move settings over from the old acct. to the new one... i guess that CAN work, sometimes, but not always. some apps (not sure if photoshop is among them) want you to install under the user account that will be running it.

just another tool to keep in the arsenal... :)

I'm afraid at this point I have to go back to your first post here...I
have very strong doubts about the validity of your copy of Photoshop but
there's a pretty sure way to test it.

Did you download and install the 7.0.1 update? If not, do it now. If the
updater errors out and says it can't find Photoshop 7.0 then there's a
99.99% chance that you have a pirated copy.

If it works, then it may just fix whatever the problem is.

It turns out that my computer had a bad registry.

There are three types of install you can do from a WIN XP CD:
1) just the WIN XP system files
2) WIN XP system files and create a new Registry
3) erase the disk and install WIN XP with a new Registry.

After (2) all applications and their data are on the hard drive, but the applications are not in the registry so a new install is needed just for the registry.

PS7 installed from the normal user space (which has administrator privileges). Also Acrobat 9 Pro installed after the Microsoft KB#### fix to the Windows Installer was loaded, also in the normal user space.

I'm thinking that my problems were related to a messed up registry and that using Safe Mode somehow bypassed the problem.
