How to make it so layer effects pulldown isn't pulled down by default?

In photoshop, when an effect is applied to a layer, an "FX" arrow pulldown automatically appears showing the applied effects (i.e. dropshadow, stroke, etc). Often i find myself copying a layer style and pasting it to a bunch of layers at the same time. Then i find myself having to spend the time hitting that little pulldown arrow for the layer effects. I don't like them showing because the layer panel gets too crowded. Is there a way to change this default?

Q. 1;
Little downward arrow in the layers palette. (click)
Palette options>uncheck expand new effects.

We don't have palettes in CS4 anymore, they're called panels now.

Of course, The OP doesn't specify what version he's using, but he does refer to a panel. :/

Sorry for not mentioning what version of Photoshop i was using. It is CS3, and thanks Tom, that appears to be what I was looking for. I'm not sure how i missed it. Thanks again.
