Any bright ideas how to make this barn look like its part of the peeling paint? i tried overlay, multiply and just about every other blend mode, but nothing looks like what i see from other people compositing things like this. the barn never looks like its painted on the paint chips.

Try the "Darker Color" or "Color Burn" layer modes — and reduce opacity.

Also try painting on a new layer using the Clone Stamp tool with various opacities/fill of the tool and of the layer itself.

I layered with the texture on top and added a mask ... then I used the brush tool with a 35% opacity and blended.

What do you mean by blended? do you mean brushed away certain areas to reveal the barn or a blending mode choice.

brushed away with a soft round brush .. I'm sure it can be done better, .. I didn't spend a lot of time on it .. and probably better with a textured brush rather than just a soft round.

Donald, this is EXACTLY the sort of thing the Advanced Blending function is for in the layers palette.

Is there a big difference between that area and using the layers palette blending modes? i am not sure of the difference between the two. nice job by the way.

Yes. The "blend if" sliders at the bottom affect the interaction pixels on different layers in ways that the usual blending modes do not. You really can't duplicate the look (easily) any other way.

Here's my quick stab at it.

church-test.psd <http://www.silkrooster.com/adobe-forums/church-test.psd>

I used the luminosity from the channels to create a mask. I did use a brush to remove the edges of the boards on the mask it self.

Donald the colors are too saturated for a peeling painting it is perhaps conceptually not quite correct, it should have some sense of vibrance but not be vibrant.

This is what happens if you overlay the church in "Darker Color" mode at 50% Opacity plus a touch of "Blend if .

If white is too intense you could try a darker shade of gray or put a white filled layer above the black layer and use opacity as a visual way to decide on the amount of white.

The psd file is in post #16 just below the image. That psd is for post #17. Sorry if I am confusing anyone. I decided to leave post 16 as is just for another option. There is no psd for #16. The only difference between the two image is the color of the background layer.

Here is a break down image. Maybe this will help any new users reading this.

There are some new Layer Modes in the later versions of Photoshop — but I am not sure in which version they first appeared.

I used "Darker Color" (where which ever Layer holds the DARKER color in overlying pixels predominates ; but there us also a "Lighter Color" Mode in which the Lighter Pixel takes precedence.

"Lighter Color" Mode would produce this effect where the lighter tones gain prominence and, in this case, the white paint (which was in fact the UNDER-layer totally over-powers the barn which only shows up when it covers bare wood.

Posts just for interest because its not what you want for this image but could be if you had a white church and a dark texture underneath.

I really like everyones input on this. the one thing i wish i could pull off would be actually only having the barn appear on the paint itself, but i guess that would require a lot of layer mask brushing. i still want to try replicating a few of these attempts.

Silkrooster, again thanks for trying but i think some of this layer stuff is beyond what i have tried. for instance, i am not sure how the mask behind the barn layer is the paint chips? i usually apply a layer mask to hide or reveal things, so i would expect that mask to look white behind the barn. dont get too concerned trying to teach me some of these techniques. i will hash them out when i have time to delve deeper, which should be in another twenty years or so.

Wade_Zi...@adobeforums.com

You would be able to repeat it even if at first you screw it up it would all come back to you and things would fall into place.

I think that the technique that Wade is talking about that lets you map an image to another grayscale texture or shaded object could be Filter/Distort/Displace?

Silkr...@adobeforums.com

If the texture was repeatable you might be able to use the texture filter or pattern fill.
Donald have you tried just overlaying the texture over top of the barn and lowering the opacity. The texture would not be as strong but it may be another way to go. The advantage would be no masks. But if you want to get rid of the edges of the boards then I believe masks may be the way to go.
There are so may ways to accomplish this, some better than others.

Donald...@adobeforums.com

Yes, i have no trouble with masks, but when you got into the white and black fill layer, that was new to me. at first i hated the board lines, then on my second attempt,i thought it was a little funky to not have them showing. i am anxious to see if the property owner likes it or hates it. either way it was fun experimenting.

Silkr...@adobeforums.com

Mar 7, 2009, 1:56:09 AM3/7/09

Because the mask was applied directly to the barn image what ever thats beneath it will effect the finale image.
The wood texture is actually removing portion of the barn image therefore a white fill or black fill would show through.
Experimenting is always fun for me anyways. :)
