text size in PDF documents

I am trying to pin down how to calculate the size of text in a PDF document. I am using a certain API to pull apart PDF documents, I am able to get the text state and its parameters, and the current transformation matrix values, but the spec is not very clear about how to get the actual text size, similar to point size in say Word. Anyone know how to calculate font size or vertical displacement for a text object in PDF?
