Hello:

While I have used Frame for a couple of years, I've never used to to create an index. I understand that I need to insert markers and that the way that I enter the text in the marker window affects how it will appear in the generated index.

But I cannot seem to be able to figure out why I am seeing two entries in the index when I thought I was creating a single subentry. If I understand the Adobe documentation, if I insert a colon between text items a subentry is created. But why is the subentry showing by itself?

That is, I inserted "ASCII commands: common" as a marker. When I generate the index, I get the following:

A
ASCII commands
common B-3

C
Common B-3

Is this how it's supposed to work? (I think I'm missing something.)

Thanks for any guidance you could give me.

On your posting you show a space after the colon, do you have a space or perhaps this is just a way around the syntax for the forum?

If you do have a space, you shouldn't put one -- that's what's generating the second entry.

Yes, there's a space (I didn't know that would make a difference). I knew it had to be something really, really simple and that someone here would help me out.

Thanks!

OMG, I have inherited several large books and have been removing the spaces after the colons for ease of viewing and to avoid the spell checker complaining about words with colons in their middles.

HOWEVER...for what it is worth...

I just checked one of my books and cannot see any second entries as Kimberly finds.

So, is this space-after-the-colon thing another urban myth?

Myth.

In the original post, "Common" is not the same as "common" when FM
creates an index. Kimberley must have a spurious entry/marker with a
cap version of the term somewhere else in the vicinity.

Hi,

Spaces after the semicolon are deleted in the index entries in the index file. Spaces will not create a copy of the sub-entry as main entry.

At least that's the case when I tested this with FrameMaker 8.0p277.

Best regards

Winfried

Moi?? promulgating myths, and in public?? When I almost always test stuff first before posting, even. But not this time. How embarrassing ... Sorry, all!
