Or Amapi full version 4 <http://amapi.idevgames.com/> modelling programmes might do a better job than some free converters.

I think Poser 3.0 imports 3ds and exports obj.

Accutrans converts 3ds to obj. Plus, you can build avatars and animate them
using it and exports them into viewpoint format.
