I frequent several online forums where I frequently click on links to PDFs.
Many fail to load and are reported as damaged files.

From the forum discussion, it is obvious that others are able to view the
file. Could the problem possibly be related to the fact that I am using an
older (5.0) version? I seem to recall that in the past, I had upgraded the
version and might have had problems of one sort, forcing me to reinstall
version 5.0.

If it is recommended that I DO upgrade, can I assume correctly that the new
version will be backward-compatable with the many PDFs saved on my computer?

Thanks.

This is an Acrobat group not Adobe Reader group.

You should be using Adobe Reader v10.1.2. Many PDFs are created for a minimum of Adobe
PDF v7 format.
