I'd want a feature to control Tab order of user interface elements (e.g. a numerical property so that pressing the Tab button moves you to the next higher number and Shift+Tab to the next lower).

Developers from an Oracle Forms background are looking for this, and writing your own focus handler with JavaScript ends up needing ugly unsupported AdfFocusUtils.focusElementDelayed().

This is an ER on the table for this (5213987)...but there are quite a
few challenges - e.g. imagine a page composed of regions/taskflows
developed by many different authors...and what if the content on the
original page was to get reordered?

I'd like the following components if they can be implemented as they will enhance the user experience

1. File Upload component with content preview (In case of images and flash files). Something like richfaces or primefaces fileupload
2. Rich Text Editor (the current one just does not have that many features, look at tinymce)

All,

Here is my wishlist:

1) Somehow let the users change configuration files at runtime (EM) for eg - server ips, password etc.

2) Table creation with 2 options pagination and without pagination. Pagination has been introduced with ADF mobile.

3) Some flavour with carousel element to give a fight to jquery elements.

I would find useful if ADF Faces components would support Base Classes in the same way Business Components does.
In other words, defining a subclass of  javax.faces.component.UIComponent to be extended by any ADF Faces component.

How about controlling Visible or Rendered properties from View Object attribute hints?

My WishList features:

  • Control Tab order may be a big plus for usability
  • Better traceability for exceptions, for example an error like: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Could not find component to stream" Dont tell me about what component crash.
  • May apply AOP(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect-oriented_programming) in the BC may be interesting to control exceptions, logging ... in our custom business logic.

Eeeek! Aspects - there's a topic!  I really find AOP an incredibly opaque approach to building applications, and in my opinion a great way to build un-maintainable code.  Thankfully the trendiness for AOP has dived as the cool kids started to talk about closures instead. In the case of  ADF BC I feel that the existing extension point of sufficient for common needs such as logging and audit and I've always struggled to think of any other sensible use cases for AOP anyway. I'd be interested to understand for what use cases it would be beneficial (as opposed to contrived)

Conceptually, I'd want two new properties on every navigable UI element:
- Tab Sequence (a number, default empty)
- Skip in Tab Sequence (a boolean, default false)

Usecase 1: Developer sets Tab Sequence on some or all elements. When cursor is on an element and Tab is pressed, cursor moves to element with next higher Tab Sequence number (or to next lower in the case of Shift+Tab). Not set will be considered zero. Tab between elements with same Tab Sequence should be in layout order as today.

Usecase 2: Developer sets Skip in Tab Sequence on a few elements (e.g. buttons). When cursor focus reaches such an element through Tab navigation, focus moves on to next element.

Technical ideas (feel free to ignore)
- At page rendering, framework builds a map of client ID and tab sequence to ease conversion from tab number to component
- For dynamic regions, this map needs to be updated when region content changes
- For performance reasons, create Client Component property on layout component or region. If not set (should be default), no special Tab handling

It's a matter of development guidelines to ensure that different ADF libs do not use same numbers.

Marcus,

You might be hitting some known bugs in this area:
- Bug 14019569 - TABLE SORT ON EJB BINDINGS EXECUTES FULL PAGINATION
- Bug 16304421 - RANGE PAGING RETURNS INCORRECT RESULT WHEN SCROLL FROM TOP TO BOTTOM BACK TO TOP

Regards,
Steven.

On 26-3-2013 12:47, marcus.schoenbach wrote:
Hi,

the A-Team article is nearly what we need, but there are some limitations

The number of entries per page is based on the range size of the used iterator, the auto height property of the table doesn't matter und must be the same as range size. We've a customization dialog where the user can choose the number of entries per page. I managed this by constantly setting the rangeSize to this value in the pager bean before accessing the range set. The value in the iterator always seems to be reseted to the value configured in the page def.

We're using EJB3 and stateless session beans for our data layer. When the paged table is rendered, the rangeQuery in the session bean is called once to count the numbers of entries. After that it is directly called #entries / rangeSize times to read all entries from the table in chunks. To my mind there should be
 a) one count and one read query for the first page and additonal queries, if the user navigates in the pager
or
 b) one query to get all entries at once

The sorting is now page based. Only the currently visible entries on the page are sorted. A user would expect sorting for all entries in the table. Is it possible to intercept the sorting? Until now I haven't found a working hint, how to intercept the sort operation to issue a JQL query with the corresponding order by clause and retrieve the matching chunk for the displayed page. I've only found samples where the sort options are set manually in a sort listener.

Kind regards
 Marcus

Sten there are a number of discussions on the challenge (e.g. how reused regions might want different tabbing models based on how they are used in that case).
People who understand the problems far better than me have been discussing this on places like this:

http://myfaces.10567.n7.nabble.com/Trinidad-implementing-tabIndex-attributes-on-select-components-td35018.html

There is also a wiki
http://wiki.apache.org/myfaces/CustomTabOrder
which indicates why its not straight forward.

hope this helps

Simply if you read the code, the code you are reading is not the code path that is executing. If you come in cold to maintaining a system that uses AOP and were not aware of it, you're going to be pretty mystified as to what is going on. All it takes is the wrong person to leave a dev team and
you've lost the knowledge of how the aspects relate. Just a personal opinion based on my experience so take it as you will.
All that aside there is still the matter of what the actual use case would be for using AOP? Even the "obvious" use case of say defining functional data security  (row level filtering based on identity ) is not something you could use aspects for.

Based on your response given, lucky I don't suggest support for OSGI or servlet 3.0 :-)

Many times in legacy applications, custom business code don't have exceptions controls, logs/audit and we don't know flow of call executions, ... Simply I suggest AOP how a tool to take control of business logic easily, without need write tons of try/catch blocks and if logger.isFine checks.

Thats simply a wishlist, if you decided not apply this suggestion in the product roadmap, don't problem.

It would be great to have support for 'disabled' entries in a model based LOV.

For example, the selectItems in the selectOneChoice (and other components) have the attribute disabled, to show certain entries greyed-out. This is easily used for static lists or Java Collection lists.
However, if you'd like to use this for a model-based lov you need custom java code to 'wrap and convert' the BC to a list and set the diabled property (see for example number 102 on the ADF Code Corner Articles).

It would be great if there would be a much simpler, probably more declarative, way to have attributes disabled (based on some logic off course).

I would also like to see an enhancement for input components to set a value for a "hint text" (e.g. like the text in the Google groups search input field "Search for topics") per property. There are vairous posts and blog entries regarding this topic but it seems to be highly ADF version dependent and if you're using plain ADF or WebCenter Portal.

Just setting a component property to the text to display and let ADF do the rest would make it a lot easier:-)

Hi *,

many customers are asking for a min / max position for the splitter component plus deactivation of the collapse / restore icon.

Reason for that is an improvement of UX. Currently if an unexperienced user collapses the splitter sometimes he does not find the restore icon and calls the user help line. No joke, that's true.

Hi,

Many a times we see adf query component as a black box where we have very little scope to customize it. So inorder to customize the behavior as well as the look and feel we end up in building our own custom query component but that lacks features like "saved query", "add new fields" etc.

Model driven LOV : This also seems to be a black box as well.

Some more wishes came up this morning from a discussion on customers side:

- Multi Column Shuttle (Currently it is only possible to have a value/label tupple.)
- Multi Column AutoSuggest dropdown list with the ability to fill more than one input text (e.g. zip / city combination)

On my wish list:
Currently it is very easy to drag a VO's attribute from the data controls and drop it on a page as a select component.  JDeveloper asks you about binding a select list, what the label should be, and what the value.  Then it puts the right configuration in the pageDef and on the page.
But sometimes, I'm trying to put a managed bean property on the page, not a value from a VO. Right now, you have to put the right stuff in the pageDef yourself (putting the component on the page isn't hard) - and I've had trouble getting it right (scratch head ... how did I do this last time? ... search the JDev forum and web).  Documentation of the properties of pageDef elements could be better.
Wish - can I get similar drag and drop for managed bean properties?

does "faster JDeveloper" count here? ;-)

+1 for that

Infact when we drag things on page or do other stuff in jDev which results in multiple file update by jDev; can we please get a 'preview' check, upon selection of which jDev should show what all changes it's going to do n in what file.

I have been a jDev user since more than a decade, but I wish I have this feature while doing some changes.

regards - rutwik
