Project

Acts as Xapian is a search plugin for Ruby on Rails. It makes use of the Xapian search engine and it's ruby bindings.

This plugin is currently suitable for small to mid size projects, that need a powerful full text search solution. It claims to be easy in use, well integrated into Rail's ActiveRecord plus a straightforward code base.

Alternatives are acts_as_solr, acts_as_ferret, Ultrasphinx, ThinkingSphinx, acts_as_indexed, acts_as_searchable or acts_as_tsearch.

Features

• Full text searching
  - search trough multiple models or just one, results are returned by absolut relevancy
  - supports boolean queries ("Spongebob NOT Patrick")
  - Google-like query syntax ("title:Harry Potter")
  - similarity searches
  - built in spelling correction (à la "Did you mean?")
• Collapsing
  You can specify a field to collapse on, and only the most relevant result from each value of that field is returned.
  
• Offline indexing
  That means no daemons. In all major cases this is a big plus, in some others you'll have to get used to it.
  Note: You'll have to trigger the update index rake task with a cron job or something similar.
• Ranged searching
  You can search for number, string and date ranges. Note: It's implemented but it'll need some improvement.
