Thanks for our reply, it is reassuring to know that I am not the first. If
you could share your code then that would be tremendous and I am all for
keeping to the AM API since it will make it easier if I end up switching
gateways further down the line.

I had the same issue with protx (now sagepay) and I ended up customizing active merchant to suit (I can put the code on github if you are interested).
I have used sagepay server on a php project and I seem to remember that the differences between the 'direct' and 'form' as far as the protocol goes were fairly small, but you will need to consider allowing the sagepay server to contact your server when the transaction is completed or cancelled. On a positive note though, you will not have to deal with 3d secure which is a pain in the a**.

Other than watching the two Railscasts I am new to ActiveMerchant.
I am about to embark on the cc payment pages of a site and I can use
SagePay (or Worldpay but that sounds like a bad idea from my research

I was hoping someone could recommend the best way to deal with pending
payments using paypal express when the transaction doesn't complete
immediately. Should you poll paypal every 6 hours or so to see if the
payment_status changes to "Completed"? Or is there a way to set up an
IPN address with express?

"Test Mode" in Authorize.Net and Authorize.Net CIM

I've made a patch that addresses some of the confusion over "test
mode" in Authorize.Net (and CIM) gateways and also allows for easier
co-existence of multiple gateway credentials (some running against the
test gateway, and some against the production gateway) within the same
app.
