We recently became aware that Shepherd’s Heart does SNAP outreach on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 10-12 at 1401 north 34th street. In order to provide services to our Central Texas neighbors on as many Saturdays as possible, we will be changing the date of our SNAP Outreach from the third Saturday of the month to the first Saturday of the month, effective Saturday May 5, 2012. Our new hours will be 12:30-4:00 pm. Location: 1601 Clay Avenue (corner of 16th St. and Clay Ave.) Anyone who needs assistance filling out SNAP applications is welcome. <MORE> (posted 4-25-2012)

·        Work experience key factor for urban teens to overcome poverty – It costs $800 for a urban teen to get three weeks of intensive pre-employment job training then be placed in a local business for three more weeks, earning a paycheck and beginning their road to self-sufficiency. In many cases, the teens are then hired by the local business or organization in which they were placed. Nothing is as empowering to overcome poverty as a good job, yet many lower-income teens do not have the help to navigate the employment system. Mission Waco’s summer youth employment program depends on outside donations to succeed. If you are interested in helping, just let us know! 753-4900 (posted 4-24-2012)

·        Jubilee Theater Performance Camp – What was often a privilege for those who had money, now is a reality for all children. Due to Mission Waco’s Style Show, funding for a full-scale play and scholarships for children to participate in the first Jubilee Theatre summer “Performance Camp” is a reality. This summer, Mission Waco will offer its first acting camp for children and youth (ages 6-18) from all over Waco ($225-$250) on June 25-30. Details are on the Jubilee Theatre website: www.jubileetheatre-waco.org (posted 4-24-2012)

·        Waco Housing video – The City of Waco has recently launched an amazing new website – www.WacoHousingSearch.org. This short commercial tells all about it; please share with anyone who might be interested: http://youtu.be/UkXequ-HJWM . (posted 4-24-2012)

·        Cornerstone Assistance Network of Central Texas Website – Cornerstone Assistance Network of Central Texas is a non-profit intermediary that builds collaboration and advances programs and services that promote restoration of offenders, ex-offenders, their families, victims and communities. Their new website is almost complete (www.cornerstone-centx.org), take a look to learn more about this exciting initiative. You will find online under the heading of ‘Partners’ a Memorandum of Understanding that you may use to request to be a partner or affiliate of Cornerstone Assistance Network Central Texas. Contact Dane Fowlkes, Interim Executive Director, at (254) 495-4170 or ad...@cornerstone-centx.org for more information or if you are interested in having someone come speak to any sized group about the Cornerstone vision. (posted 4-24-2012)

·        Food Network documentary – Here is the link to the food network documentary that aired this past weekend http://www.foodnetwork.com/share-our-strength/package/index.html you can view the whole thing online if you missed it when it was on TV. The video highlights a lot of things many of us may already know, but it still a great way to raise awareness and make people understand why they need to support things like food drives, food pantries, SNAP and other hunger fighting efforts/programs.
