PCIe X-1 Serial Card & Dell 630s

Long story short.. I have a older Dell 630s which has been my work horse computer for the last few years, I got a new system and now I am re-assigning the 630s, (replacing a older home built 1ghz system) .

I need to add a DB9 Serial port

I have tried two different brand/makes of USB -> Serial cables but I could not get the device drivers to load and work with the serial home automation device software as it seems that the cable did not have enough voltage to push the commands to the home automation devices, as my older systems built-in serial connector. 

I then purchased a 'Low Profile' PCI DB25 card, but when I install this card the system would not boot...

...system would power up but would not get the BIOS screen.

So I could only guess that the card itself is bad {It was suggested a bad BIOS?}

So it was suggested that I try a PCIe x1 serial card.

Does anybody have and experence with PCIe x1 cards?

I am thinking of purchasing the following card from the "SuperMediaStore"

I configure a wide variety of serial devices such as network switches and routers in the field. When I moved to my first usb-only laptop several years ago, I had to find a usb to serial solution. Like you, I tried several USB to Serial adapters from the local stores without any luck. I As a last ditch effort, I ordered a Keyspan adapter online based on a past experience with them and it worked like a charm. I even ordered a spare after several months of use because I was afraid it'd be hard to find a replacement later on.

It has worked flawlessly while communicating with serial hardware (both new and old) on Linux, OSX, and XP over the past few years. I assume it'd work fine with later versions of Windows too. I doubt the power issue will be a problem with this adapter. Give this a try if the PCIe card doesn't work out!

Jason's solution is much more elegant than mine, which involves carrying around a 200mhz dell optiplex that I ssh into from my laptop, and connect to serial devices over that, hasn't come up in a while, and I don't think there's currently an optiplex in my trunk, but maybe.
